THIS WAS JUST A FASHION PARTY
Michael Kors rocks and rules
Fashion parties are just like wedding parties; all the ingredients are present (beautiful location, everyone in their best suit, drinks, music) but it doesn't really get wild. At weddings, that's because it's a mixed group that has never been together in that capacity before. You don't just start swinging from the lamps or doing handstands against a pole when the mother and grandmother of the bride are there sipping their advocaat.
It's usually the same with fashion parties. No one really knows each other, so you come to say you've been there, have a drink, make an Instagram that gives the impression you're having an amazing time and you go back to your hotel to finish your piece for tomorrow. That's how it goes. Most of the time.
Now I had an invite for the Michael Kors party. Of course, I would show my face there for a bit, but when my friend Fiona Hering was also going, we decided to make an evening out of it. “First a drink in my hotel? And something to eat? A person has to eat after all,” Fiona texted. Then it went on to the outfit. Fiona would go casual, I read at the moment I got into the taxi in my colorful Milly dress with pink Dsquared shoes Uh, Fi, I'm a bit over the top-ish. Luckily, Fiona was waiting for me in a smashing sequin ensemble by Mada van Gaans.
The party turned out to be in the Boom Boom Room, a legendary place high up in the Standard Hotel with the best view of New York. Read here about Josselin's wild adventure there. That was already fun because somehow we had both never been there before. Fiona had heard that Duran Duran would perform. Maybe you're from after the eighties and, like Jet and Lies, don't really know who they are anymore, but the guys from Duran Duran were the kings of my youth. Think Justin Bieber, Pharrell, and Beyoncé combined. The singer Simon le Bon was (and still is) with Yasmin le Bon, a top model from that time, which made it all even more magical.
Anyway, Fiona and I went to the Boom Boom. Glass of champagne on the left, Kate Upton on the right. We were mainly incredibly busy taking pictures of each other in all the Boom Boom corners. “I have no idea where a performance should take place here,” I said to Fiona because the space was completely full of people. Later I read that, for example, Naomi Campbell, Mario Testino, Aerin Lauder, Alessandra Ambrosio were also there, but I never saw them because it was so incredibly crowded.
Fiona and I checked out the rooftop terrace, took another forty-seven photos, and went to the other side of the bar. There we suddenly saw microphones. And a tiny stage. We quickly ordered a gin and tonic and a glass of wine and decided to stay in this strategic spot.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may we please present... Duran Duran.” They were within touching distance and like two huge groupies, we danced and sang along and wished it would last much longer.
When I told Jet and Liesbeth at breakfast the next morning how much fun it was, I first had to explain for seven minutes with examples how big these guys were. Then I showed a photo of Fiona and myself in the front row in front of that stage. “Nice, huh,” said Jet. “Two sweet mothers going completely wild for a moment...”
And that puts everything back in perspective. But what a great party it was. Thanks, Michael. Next time at my place?
