10 STYLE LESSONS FROM
MILAN AND PARIS
I am back from Milan (read here just how it was) and Paris (or here), in fact, I'm almost going again (but more on that later) to Paris but I have my hungry fashion eyes wide open because if a trend starts somewhere, it is in these fashion meccas.
1. Aviator
Did you think you couldn't wear pilot-frame sunglasses anymore? No worries. They still fit perfectly into the fashion picture. If you're very eager to shop, you can grab the Diorsplit from Dior, the subtler one from Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, or MaxMara.
2. Wear the pajamas
The most delicious trend in my opinion and perfect for some serious lounging. Deluxe pajama pants (like those from Odeeh that you can buy at Pauw). Wear a top in the same print or possibly a top in a different print that just doesn't match. Matching, clashing, and mismatching is the word. And no, you don't necessarily have to wear a decent coat in a solid color. I chose to wear a tailored coat from Dries van Noten over it in Milan.
3. Dark lipstick
Please get good advice because there is a huge risk of yellow teeth, but if you can handle it, then you're completely ‘en vogue’. The key is to keep the rest of your makeup very neutral because too much is fun when it comes to shoes or bags, but we apply makeup in moderation.
4. Doe een ring om je vinger
But then do it with four fingers at once. You can do this with multiple rings, but the coolest and totally Alessandro Michele way is to buy a ring that encompasses all four of your fingers. I don't know if it's super handy for spreading butter on sandwiches and locking your bike, but that's not what we're talking about right now. You saw them at Gucci and Dior, but there will surely be some high street variants hitting the market.
5. The Burlington tights
Not much is expected of your dress when you wear those amazing Burlington check stockings from Prada under your outfit. It almost makes me look forward to winter...
6. Capes
The cape remains, and I'm glad because it's an easy item that instantly gives your outfit a boost. It's warm, flowy, feminine, and ideal for all those moments when wearing a coat is inappropriate, yet you still need a warm blanket around you. In my opinion, it's also the ideal maternity wear. The cape was more in the form of a wrap last season; this autumn it will appear more as a stiffer little coat with two openings for your arms. A bit more polished. I saw it at SportMax, Prada, and Paul Smith.
7. Multiple earrings
One hole in each ear is no longer enough. Sorry. A bit of a hip girl has at least two holes in each ear and preferably even one more. The joke is that you wear a different earring in each hole (ideal for types like me who always lose one) and while you're at it, you squeeze a ring around your cartilage.
8. In fire and flames
Red is your color this summer and this autumn. Not bright red but more a marriage between orange and red, very sultry and feminine. From Dior to the more affordable Maje and everything in between.
9. Yellow is it
It's almost a shame that I've worn my mustard yellow Fendi pumps so often that they can barely handle it anymore, but yellow is the color of now. Especially the mustard yellow variant. Claes Iversen (you know, our creative of the year winner) has a beautiful dress in his II by Claes Iversen collection, I saw it at Hermès, at Valentino, and well, where not actually.
10. The glasses case is hot
At Chanel and Dior, we saw the glasses case bag. A small, elongated example that reminds you of your grandma's glasses case. Now everything that smells like grandma is totally hot, hence this shape of bag. If you want to be really current, you wear this bag alongside your regular handbag as we saw at Dior.
