5 X ROUND IS AT HAND IN INTERIOR LAND
Dutch people! Listen carefully to my words again. Round is the new thing in interior land.
Yes, let that sink in well.
Now I will quickly explain where I am getting all this from.
It stands out anyway when you flip through the current new interior magazines. Admittedly, you only see it when you realize it, but then you have something. Just grab the amazing Oct/Nov edition of Dutch ELLE Decoration. Or the autumn edition of JAN Living. You will see: round is everywhere.
Trend watcher Lidewij Edelkoort already said in May 2015 that we are on the brink of a totally new approach to color, material, and form. Say goodbye to all existing conventions. The use of color is being revamped (gray is definitely not boring and can also be chic, red is really not just for the red carpet anymore, and blue is perfectly suitable for your sofa/new vase/your new wallpaper.)
And entirely in light of these changes, it also holds true: round is the bomb! Round items are the new classics. Literally, figuratively, and even on a symbolic level. We are increasingly moving towards a society that is more democratic and organic. Everything is round, everything flows into each other, everything is interconnected, male and female merge into an androgynous feeling, everything interlocks, everything is one together, everything – yes yes, I’ll stop again.
Round! Round is the new thing! Round!
Okay sorry, now I really stop.
Round!
Alright, all jokes aside: with appropriate pride, I present to you my ultimate top 5 of round interior things. Make sure your mouth doesn't drop open.
Interior thing 1
A rectangular or square bed? Why would you? Buy a round bed. Sleeps wonderfully free and easy. You can find fantastic vintage or brand new examples, but the most fun is of course a handcrafted piece. People are increasingly choosing to acquire a few unique and especially very well-made items, instead of a bulk of poorly made junk. So call that cool furniture maker!
Interior thing 2
Take the Herman Table, a beautiful timeless table with a historically appealing touch. You must have it, right? It is the ultimate mix of female and masculine. But… the glossy Moon Coffee Table from studio Space Copenhagen for Gubi is also worth mentioning, just like the round natural stone table Kenaz (with fossils) from the Nature’s Jewel Box collection by Steve Leung for Visionnaire. That’s what I say: choices, choices, choices.
Interior thing 3
A round lamp is what you will want! If not now, then very soon. It wouldn’t surprise me if you start talking about the incredibly chic seventies touch of lamp Boule from www.pulpoproducts.com, or that you feel love for a tiptop glass pendant lamp (in your desired color and finish) from Rothschild & Bickers. Look at that.
Interior thing 4
A semi-circular sofa! Take this incredibly sophisticated Heath sofa from Yabu Pushelberg. A truly beautiful piece with a round corner, where it is wonderful to curl up. Blanket on, Netflix on, let that social menopause come.
Interior thing 5
Hallelujah for this bathroom with round funky shapes, designed by star architect Patricia Urquiola. You can find it in Room Mate Hotel Giulia, and the theme is 50’s Milano – with a nod to the history of graphic arts in that city. I say: if you feel like giving me something nice again, just because I’m such a nice editor, think of this round black sink with a red interior. Super original gift if you ask me.
That was it. BYE.
