7 TIMES YOU KNOW FOR SURE THAT REAL LIFE HAS STARTED AGAIN
Even if you don't have to consider the official school holidays, those summer months still have an endless calm where the mailbox doesn't fill up as quickly and the phone doesn't ring as often. But that period, dear friends, is now over and here's why.
1. The alarm clock
I didn't need it at all during the summer. I naturally woke up by the sunlight peeking through the curtains and because I knew I could hand over my children in pajamas to my parents or the babysitter (okay, nanny, but that sounds so snobby) and especially because there was no traffic. This brings me organically to point two.
2. Traffic
It's back, you know. I drove from Haarlem to Amsterdam today at a crawl. Honestly, I would have been faster walking. Luckily, Adeline gave these tips that might actually make you enjoy that traffic jam. It can't get any crazier.
3. TV
Look, and that's actually nice. Yesterday was the last Summer Guests (may I kindly ask VPRO to put a real interviewer on this program next year? How nice would it be if Matthijs van Nieuwkerk presented this program...) and everyone is getting into the groove. RTL Boulevard in a new style, De Wereld Draait Door, Holland’s Next Top Model, and Expeditie Robinson, and then also Narcos which I really need to start. I can't get out the door anymore.
4. Administration
And I don't mean the homework I have to keep up for my accountant (I systematically ignore that, summer or winter) but the school administration. Sports day, birthdays that need to be celebrated at school, keeping up with the school’s web pages (no one tells me that school suddenly starts a quarter of an hour earlier, really no one), depositing money for my neighbor girl who is going to do Amsterdam City Swim; everything, everything, everything. It's a part-time job, you know, a family.
5. Not drinking anything all day
You start on a summer day around four with a cautious glass of wine, now the alcohol-free days have already arrived. Because I have to get up early tomorrow and so on. Way too responsible. #boring.
6. Counting down
To the next holiday. Really.
