CAROLIEN’S FAST LANE LIFE
Yes, another fresh weekday diary from our Carolien. Because you know: she never sits still…
Jon and I are having quite a hard time letting go of our dream wedding and jumping back into reality... And luckily, we are not the only ones! Last week, we spent half of the evenings with friends who were in Italy and who wanted to hold on to that indescribable feeling of happiness for as long as possible (with us). So we started cooking Italian, drank Italian wines as if our lives depended on it, and to the great annoyance of the neighbors, pretended we were dancing by the pool to Drake and Rihanna. And just like in Italy, the evening ended with a good shot of this little rascal! Why do we always think limoncello is a good idea in the evening, but you come down hard on it the next morning?
A big advantage of such a marriage is that all the ‘leftovers’ have ended up straight in our home. Now, leftovers always sound a bit gross, but believe me: these are remnants you would kill for. My husband was just a bit less happy when he had to drive back to the Netherlands with a full bus... But luckily, he now also sees the big advantages of it. So now we sit down every evening with a glass of my absolute favorite Chardonnay (14 leftover bottles to go) and a number of beautiful Jo Malone candles have only burned halfway in Italy! So you now find a tableau vivant in every corner of our house, richly decorated with these lovely scented candles. Although Jon only allows them to burn for a short time, since it's still 40 degrees outside... Oh well, anyone who wants a nice scent in the house has to endure some heat!
We had barely landed for 24 hours or we both had to go back to work again. But Jon had it a lot harder than I did: while he immediately dove into busy directing days for the new series All in Kitchen, I got to go to Lisbon for ‘work’! I know, gotta love my job... The film Sneekweek was being shown there and I was flown in with the director to be present. I was barely half an hour in the center and immediately fell head over heels for this beautiful city. A kind of combination of Barcelona and Paris, with stunning architecture and bizarrely delicious eateries. When we ended up the next day at Palácio Chiado, where I had the best sushi of my life, I immediately texted Jon to ask when he is free soon to plan a weekend in Lisbon. An absolute must!
I was so afraid that once back in the Netherlands, I would immediately have to pull out my winter sweaters and set my boots by the front door. But it is just high summer! I didn't think it would happen this year, but today I experienced my first beach day in my own country. What a party: building sandcastles with two girlfriends plus little ones, eating snacks until you drop, and taking a refreshing dip in the sea in between. I practically grew up on the beach of Scheveningen, but since I moved to Amsterdam, I really never go to the coast anymore... Note to self: sun + sea + beach = top combo in my own country!
And besides such a lovely beach day, that summer wardrobe can also be worn a bit longer. Although I am also secretly looking forward to those new winter items that have been hanging in my closet for weeks. One thing I am less looking forward to: those closed shoes... There is nothing better than putting on your flip-flops in the morning and wandering around all day in them. Especially now that I received these custom-made wedding Havaianas last week. Every day when I look down, I think back to the most beautiful day of our lives. Another solution: set the thermometer at home to 30 degrees, so I can walk around in flip-flops all year round. I just don't know if our energy bill will be very favorable for that...
