HOW FILMMAKERS FOOL US
These films were actually shot in Canada
I'm a fan of pretty much everything cool that comes from Canada: Justin Bieber, Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with his adorable puppy face, and I could go on like this for a while. Moreover, a lot of fun stuff turns out to have been made in Canada without us knowing it. Like a number of top films I had no idea about, and now I feel totally fooled, so I looked it up for you.
1. Mean Girls
Holy crap. I did not see that coming. The typically ‘American’ North Shore High School was in Illinois, just outside Chicago, right? Nope, just filmed in Canada. Fun fact: the Canadian Playboy mansion of Regina George is even up for sale for a whopping 12 million dollars.
2. White Chicks
Okay, the opening scene may have been filmed in New York to mislead viewers, but the rest of the film really takes place in Canada. And we all know that the sisters Brittany and Tiffany Wilson are a parody of Paris and Nicky Hilton, right? “What a beautiful chocolate man. Ah-ha-ha-ha.”
3. Suits
Maybe not a movie, but definitely one of my favorite series at the moment. The same applies here: only the pilot was filmed in the city that never sleeps. The rest of all the Pearson Hardman lawyer adventures? All captured in Toronto.
4. Nova Zembla
Ah look, a Reinout Oerlemans gem from our own soil. Besides Iceland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, the last expedition of Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerck was largely filmed in Canada. And here we are completely fooled as viewers regarding locations: the Amsterdam scenes were shot in Bruges. Like whatdaf…
5. Brokeback Mountain
Those. Beautiful. Nature shots. If you don't know this film (which I would highly recommend, because it's painfully good), at least google the unparalleled landscape scenes. Supposedly in America, but secretly filmed in, yes, you guessed it…
6. The Notebook
My favorite movie, for now and forever. Always crying, always screaming furiously at the laptop that Noah and Allie need to get back together, and the happiest during the beautiful boat scene with all the geese in the water. People, if this is in Canada then I'm moving, for real.
