Kiki’s Winter Where Abouts
Part 3
Just admit it. It's okay, I do it too. Since the whole month of December started, you've been out of sorts. Fatigue is setting in, you have little energy and actually want to binge-watch Netflix all day with a blanket over your head and eat calorie-rich food. Feeling a winter slump? I do. And every year, more than 500,000 people in the Netherlands do too. Fortunately, the world is wide and there are always tropical summer spots where it's nice to hang out in the winter. Are you bringing the sunscreen?
Piscadera Bay, Curaçao
Curaçao is the ideal base for the winter chaggies among us. The island is located just 12 degrees above the equator, but exactly outside the hurricane zone. This means you typically have a lovely chill-on-the-beach climate with an average temperature of 27 degrees. If you ask me, skip the whole tourist beach area, rent a car, and head to Piscadera Bay south of the island. The beaches at that bay are exactly as they should be: pure white, clean, and the water is just unbelievably clear. If I were to send a postcard, I would fight with the others at the kiosk to carry the view of Grote Knip on my belly. And now you might think: meh, Curaçao, isn’t that where all those Dutch people are and they eat frikandel speciaal? That could be true, it depends on where you go. If you choose Piscadera Bay (a bit more unspoiled and greener), you’ll find yourself among the locals. A well-known beach club is Hook’s Hut where you can order delicious cocktails and dine on the beach in the evening with cozy lights and your feet in the sand. A strategically nice place to stay is the Floris Suite Hotel. You’ll be in Willemstad in no time, but you can also seek peace by driving your rental car towards the Westpunt of the island. Oh, and also not entirely unimportant… If you’re going to get a tan anywhere, man oh man, it’s here.
