Lesson 1: The 101801 from Max Mara

In three months, it will be my birthday, but somehow I always get insights bordering on brilliance about my perfect gift around this time. Like, for example, the box from Céline or the iconic camelhair coat from Max Mara. If you can slap the sticker iconic and ‘something with fashion’ on it, you’re good with me.

That’s why I thought: I’ll make a little column out of it. Every Saturday a factsheet about the coolest classics. We immediately have the perfect wishlist to rub under the noses of our generous sugar daddies. Good idea, right? And if you’re looking for a nice gift for him, you can here find it by the way…

What is it?

A coat. But it has to be one of the finest cashmere and with the very best silhouette. It falls nicely loose, so you can comfortably curl up in it on a wild autumn day. It works well in the boardroom, but also in the front row or on the beach. You can wear anything underneath or just, nice and easy, absolutely nothing.

Who oh who made this beauty?

It was Anne-Marie Beretta who designed this coat for fashion house Max Mara in 1981. Hats off, applause, and please a few statues for this woman.

How on earth do I pronounce it?

Centouno otto centouno, or in other words tsjento oeno otto tsjento oeno. But pointing in the right direction and saying: ‘Classic, iconic, cashmere’ will also help you a long way in the right direction.

How do I recognize it?

It is definitely oversized, made of the softest cashmere, double-breasted, and has kimono sleeves.

Who wears it?

Well, who doesn’t, you might as well ask. From Cindy Lauper back in the days to Paris Hilton, Claire Danes, Gigi Hadid to Kim Kardashian (did you know that Kiki has seriously, really, really had her on the phone?). No matter how intensely vulgar you are, this coat makes you instantly chic. Truly.

How much does it cost?

Well, a little more than a thousand euros. But it’s for life, right. For life. And further you don’t need much. Although my topic for next week will look very good with it…
