OSCAR BUZZ

These are the movies you need to see

With just over four months to go until the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles is transformed into a place full of the biggest names in Hollywood, I thought it might be time to start preparing for that. Anyway, the weather in the Netherlands is heading towards the depressing side, so let's schedule some more date nights at the cinema. The nominations will only be announced at the end of January, but according to The Huffington Post, these are the films that all have a chance at a golden statue in the category of ‘Best Picture’.

La La Land

Genre: comedy, drama, musical

In theaters from: December 22

Need to relax after your Christmas dinner? Enjoy that with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. La La Land is the story of a semi-successful jazz pianist and aspiring actress Mia who fall in love in, yes, surprisingly, Los Angeles (a.k.a. La La Land). Who isn't a sucker for romance around the holidays?

Jackie

Genre: biography, drama

In theaters from: February 16

Look here but here's why you want to see this.

Sully

Genre: biography, drama

In theaters from: now

Do you remember the story? Of that plane that had to land in the Hudson River in 2009? Well, there's a movie about that. With Tom Hanks in the lead role.

Manchester by the Sea

Genre: drama

In theaters from: January 19

Casey Affleck is finally shedding his ‘brother of’ title with his role in Manchester by the Sea. Not only are there rumors that this film could get a nomination for Best Motion Picture, but there are also rumors that Casey could go home with an Oscar for Best Actor. You'll have to wait until 2017, but go ahead and schedule that date.

“Popcorn, anyone?”

Arrival

Genre: drama, mystery, sci-fi

In theaters from: November 10

Movies about aliens never get boring in Hollywood, it seems. But this film is different from what we're used to, they say. I'm curious...

Hidden Figures

Genre: drama

In theaters from: February 2

Another film that has already generated quite a bit of Oscar buzz is Hidden Figures. A film about three women who, thanks to their mathematical skills, helped NASA and American astronaut John Glenn orbit the Earth. Starring Taraji P. Henson, who is also suggested to possibly receive a Best Actress nomination for this.

Loving

Genre: drama

In theaters from: February 23

Okay, unfortunately for us, it will only be seen a few days before the Oscars take place, but according to the reviews: it’s worth it. It's a story about an interracial marriage, which was forbidden at the time (1958) in the state in America where the couple lived.
