SIMONE TELLS YOU HOW YOU TOO CAN RUN A HUNDRED (YES, A HUNDRED) KILOMETERS
Running, everyone can do it. All you need is a mountain of discipline and perseverance. And you certainly don't have to be born with it. But we're going a step further. There is actually a real trend going on: running longer than a marathon. And yes, that surprises me just as much. I'm already happy if I hit sixteen. But uh, a hundred?
Ultrarunning is therefore completely hip. An ultra run is any run longer than a marathon. And especially on unpaved paths, but also on the road, the ultrarunner is becoming a concept. Away from phones and obligations, the ultrarunner seeks boundaries. They return to the essence of running. With nature as a consciousness-expanding medium. Now, of course, we are very curious about how you train for such an ultrarun. Because everyone can do it. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. A very long way, that is…
Make time
Making time for an ultrarun is really a plus. Months of training policy is necessary. No lounging on the couch or diving into the pub with your colleagues. But when you start the day together with the sun, you naturally forget that warm bed. Okay, almost naturally.
Do it together
Doing it together always goes just a bit better than when you have to go out on your own. And especially when it’s your own partner, you have an extra incentive.
Eat everything
It’s important to eat enough. Before, during, and after. And I don’t mean that you should stuff yourself with fries before hitting the hills. Many runners head out on an empty stomach or don’t replenish the burned calories. Completely wrong. When you burn thousands of calories, you need to replenish them just as hard. So I say: pasta, noodle bowls, and casseroles without having to be ashamed of it.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. A very long way, that is…
Sports drinks
Yep, they do help. Sports drinks and the so-called gel packages. A solid breakfast can mean your salvation. And handy to take with you in your running belt.
The right sports clothing
As I mentioned earlier, I have a very big irritation. When I hit the road for a good run, everything I carry must be secured. Nothing should dangle loosely or irritate, because then my run becomes hell. And this certainly applies to an ultrarun. No too loose socks, too tight shoes, or stray keys in your shoe. Chafing, rubbing, bleeding, and irritation can lead to one big failure.
Good shoes
A special trail shoe is an absolute must for an ultrarun. Breaking in your new shoes is a thing of the past. The secret lies in a well-fitting running sock and the shoe that suits your running style. So don’t just order your shoe online, but go to a running specialist.
Run into the morning
Turning over one more time is a thing of the past. The alarm goes off and you jump straight out of bed. A cup of coffee and off you go. Uh, first that banana and then go. The early morning offers only advantages. You beat the heat, everyone is still asleep (so: empty streets). You feel alone in the world and that gives a kick. The best feeling when you’re at the office by nine and already have a workout behind you. You can comfortably hit the couch right after work.
Patience is a virtue
Go easy. Train, practice, recover. When you catch the running virus, you will see that it gives you a sense of liberation. But give it time. You don’t get it for nothing.
