SLEEPING IN YOUR OWN CITY
On the list of things you don't do that often, but are incredibly nice, sleeping in a hotel in your own city is at the top for me. Now, Amsterdam isn't really my city anymore, because I've been living in Haarlem for five years, but after a dinner in the Jordaan, I would rather order a taxi or a BOB (do you know that? Someone else drives you home in your own car, brilliant) than book a hotel. While that is, of course, luxury in its highest form.
So when I was asked if I might, perhaps and possibly want to sleep a night in the W hotel, my keyboard immediately went on caps lock and I replied much faster than is cool: ‘YES DUHHH.’
“While that is, of course, luxury in its highest form.”
I mean, the W, that's either sleeping under MR PORTER or across from it (and then you're next to The Duchess). The W has the most beautiful spa in the city, views over the Dam or over the Singel. The W is five-star chic, but in a cool, contemporary version. The W has a breakfast buffet so long that while you're filling your plate, you're already doing a little workout. The W has a breakfast buffet with glass jars filled with gummies, jellybeans, and chewing gum balls. The W has the perfect soft and crispy hotel sheets and spacious rooms...
In my case, the W also welcomed me with a chilled bottle Veuve Clicquot and a painting made especially for us. And that on a Monday, people, a Monday. So if you have no idea how to surprise your loved one (or yourself), I would say: think about this piece.
