Travel & Hotspots

SO THIS IS HOW WE TRAVEL IN 2025

Let's talk about my favorite subject: come on, pack that suitcase and let's go with that banana. Not only in fashion, but also in the travel world, trends are emerging. As I here already described: millennials (everyone born between 1981 and 2000) have an enormous wanderlust.

We continuously scour ticket sites, want to Airbnb, do glamping and road trips, and prefer to avoid mass tourism and live like the locals do. Trend agency Cherry LAB and ANVR researched which travel trends we will see returning in 2025, and I found it so interesting that I want to share it with you.

Trend 1: away from the hotspots, towards culture

Have you ever heard of the word expertcation? Here, you transform into a specialist during your trip. Think about catching and eating a beast yourself, learning the language of your destination, or working a day in a rice field among the locals. Western youth increasingly want unique experiences. We want to go far, far away from the tourist hotspots and gather as much inspiration as possible. A cultural festival here, a religious celebration there, say hello to bucket list 2.0.

Trend 2: voluntourism

Self-development, world improvement, a green, fair travel experience: it's trendy and we all want it. That's why in 2025 we will see more and more trips where it becomes the norm to not only consume while traveling but also to give something back. Travel organizations are cleverly responding to this by involving us and rewarding us for conscious travel. ‘Voluntourism’ will become a new concept.

Trend 3: living la vida local

Lying on the beach all day is really a bit passé in 2025. Gaining world knowledge among the locals, that will be the new beach lounging. Thanks to social media and all kinds of trendy phone stuff, we can find like-minded people on the other side of the world in no time. Eating bizarre dishes in Vietnam, meditating with monks in Nepal, salsa dancing among the locals in Colombia, sleeping in a hammock among the Costa Ricans under the motto ‘pura vida’; we want it.

Trend 4: work less, play more

Work and private life will blend more in every way. Flying in for a meeting will be extended with a weekend or a night away with your loved one. Balance is the new starting point in 2025: work hard: sure, but quality time and the wishes of the individual come first.

Trend 5: (temporarily) working from another country

Digital nomads are already booming, but according to the research, in ten years we will hardly see anything else. More and more freelancers are popping up. Take your laptop with you and suddenly you can work anywhere. Even if you are far away, you feel at home because you are connected with your family and friends everywhere. The boundaries are blurring. Writing a book in the Philippines, a few months vlogging from Zanzibar: this shit is happening. And okay, okay, there’s nothing more delightful than making others secretly jealous with a photo of an improvised beach office including hashtag #officeoftheday.

Hey, I quite like this, I must say. Can't it be 2025 already? Time machine, anyone?
