You really have to lure us with something very nice to get Jet, Daan (our sales director), and me off the couch on a Sunday. But there were clinking glasses of rosé and sushi was waiting for us. Moreover, there were rows and stacks of designer shoes waiting for us. Because: we went to an ultra-luxury shopping event of shoe paradise Mayke in Oisterwijk, Brabant. And because we fell in love with anything Mayke, today in this column the one responsible for the PR of this shoe paradise: Maartje van Dongen.
No kidding, it must have been a busy week, with all those lovely women diving into your shoes and bags. What time did you earn your well-deserved Thank God It’s Friday moment and what’s in your glass?
‘I really let myself go on King’s Day because I truly believe in the motto: ‘work hard, dance harder’. And last Sunday was also very enjoyable and slightly chaotic, and I love that. In my glass, there’s always white wine. In that regard, I’m quite loyal; all those trendy mixes and cocktails are not for me.’
We saw you having a great time behind the turntables at the event on Sunday. So I’m extra curious about your weekend playlist.
‘For dancing, nice deep house is always good, but in the car/under the shower/while exercising, I listen to everything. Right now, Zayne’s new album Mind of Mine (Gigi Hadid’s boyfriend) is on repeat.’
What does your ideal Saturday look like?
‘A little sleeping in (or at least not having to wake up to an alarm), then having breakfast/lunch out with a friend or my sister. A little wandering around in some shops (preferably the thrift store for an addition to my vintage dish collection) and then in the evening ordering a nice charcuterie board with, of course, a nice glass of wine. With the intention of going to bed on time, but then coming home deep in the night with blisters on my feet from dancing.’
And Sunday, does it feel different than Monday?
‘Sunday is definitely my favorite for my Game of Thrones/House of Cards addiction with the bad weather we’ve had lately. With nice weather, you’ll find me in the woods for a good walk. So Sunday is often a lot more relaxed and this is also the only day I’m free with my boyfriend, so that day is often for romantic quality time.’
What do you do on the weekend to stay inspired?
‘I can’t wait for the festival season to be in full swing again. Luckily, my brain usually works overtime to process all my creative impulses, but after a festival, I’m completely creatively recharged and bursting with (often unrealistic) ideas.’
Imagine that silly and earthly matters like money and time difference don’t play a role. What would your ideal weekend look like? Breakfast in New York and dancing in Tokyo, for example?
‘On Saturday, breakfast/shopping/lunch in Istanbul, then hop to Ibiza for a late-night dinner and then dance until my feet can’t anymore. Then relax on one of the lovely beaches. Sunday evening ends with watching the Northern Lights in Iceland.’
You know what you’re talking about: if we could only buy one pair of shoes this summer, which pair would that be?
‘That would be a pair of Laurence Dacades. They are incredibly not cheap, but besides the fact that they fit wonderfully and I can dance all night in them, they have the perfect mix of feminine and tough for me. And Rosie Huntington-Whiteley often wears them too, and since I think she’s the most beautiful ever, I feel a tiny bit like Rosie in those shoes.’
Which shoe brand do you think every woman should know?
‘Golden Goose, the brand has the best sneakers, but also beautiful heels, tough ankle boots, and amazing bags. Not to mention the clothing.’
Finally, what time does your alarm go off on Monday?
‘I snooze and snooze and snooze and snooze until my boyfriend asks if I plan to go to work with this greasy hair.’
