THE BIGGEST ONE-HIT WONDERS FROM THE OLD BOX
What happened to these people?
Music videos were really a thing in the 90s. I could sit glued to the screen for hours, watching the short clips of artists on MTV, TMF, or The Box. And we’ve seen a lot of one-hit wonders flutter by here at the editorial.
“It’s always spring, in the eyes, of the tan-darts-as-si-sten-te.’ Ever heard anything from this Peter de Koning? Even the guests of the freaking Macarena were only granted one hit. HOW IS THAT? We all got happy from that song, right? And therefore, the biggest flop artists in a row who, in my opinion, deserved a career. Even if it was just one album.
Ann Lee – 2 Times
Her name probably doesn’t ring a bell, but I’m sure, absolutely sure that you know her hit ‘2 Times’. Her second song ‘Voices’ was not a success and after that, it was bye bye for Ann Lee. It probably had to do with the wrong hair clips, Ann. Sorry.
Wes – Alane
Every person has a tic, right? When I drunk hear this song, I have to dance. And I have to try to imitate the dance of the Cameroonian singer like an idiot. The feeling is stronger than me. This is simply the best song ever made. No wonder it’s also the third best-selling record of 1997. Dear Wes, for fuck's sake, where are you? We miss you.
City to City - The Road Ahead
I actually think it’s a really boring song, but I secretly would have wished the Dutch band worldwide fame. The song was originally made for a television commercial of a car brand, then shot high in the Dutch top 40 and has been played endlessly for years. What happened to them afterwards? Do you know, do I know.
Emilia – Big big world
“I’m a big big girl, in a big big world, it’s not a big big thing, if you leeeeeeave me.”
You know this too. This piece of Swedish singing talent could at least have released a second single?
Scatman John – Scatman
This is really one of my favorite golden oldies. Fun fact: did you know that Scatman John was a stutterer and incorporated his speech exercises into lyrics? ‘Ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop.’ I would have thought it was cool if this guy had released a record.
Hanson – MMMBop
The three brothers are still making music, but honestly. After this hit of a world hit, they have somewhat faded into obscurity. Too bad.
