THE WOMAN AND HER INSECURITY
No being on earth is as often insecure about themselves as a woman. Too fat, too thin, too short, too tall – there is always something wrong. The British Daily Mail decided to conduct a little research and asked 2000 women about their insecurities and how often they cross their minds each day.
The result? “The average woman criticizes herself about 8 times a day.” Eight times, EIGHT times. That's a lot, I think. And probably completely unnecessary. But try telling that to those women. The criticisms they have for themselves are, as expected, almost all related to appearance. Weight, hair, clothing choices, that sort of thing. Furthermore, they feel they need to find a perfect balance between their private life and work, think they don't earn enough money, and feel they are not doing the right job.
A woman's life is not always easy, but often that is also due to the woman herself. We set extremely high standards for ourselves and have the idea that we must do EVERYTHING. It pains my feminist heart, but a woman who combines her job as a CEO with running a successful household is still embarrassingly in the minority.
And then there's appearance, yes, it's logical that we are insecure about our bodies. Men can have a dad bod and meet the latest beauty ideal, while women with a mom bod are considered significantly less sexy. Nowadays, you need to have the waist of Romee Strijd with the butt of Kim Kardashian and the breasts of Scarlett Johansson. Good luck with that.
Some self-reflection reveals that I too am filled with insecurities. In the sunny places where I currently find myself, I walk around in a bikini during the day, but I don't really feel completely comfortable in it. Especially not when I sit or walk. For a long time, I thought I was ’too fat’ but I've gotten over that now. I'm not fat, but I'm also not at all toned or anything that resembles it. When I stand, everything is fine, but it jiggles when I sprint through the scorching sand and it rolls and bulges when I sit cross-legged on a sunbed. Now I don't know anyone here, so I don't worry too much about it, but there's no way I'm just going to sit around in a bikini in Amsterdam.
Very silly, but that's just how it is. Look, there will come a day when these kinds of childish things are just behind you. At least, I hope so. Being a woman, we can't make it easier, but we can make it more fun.
