Ellie Goulding X M.A.C Cosmetics
WHY EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS LOOK AT HOME
When it comes to serious street style, you are at interview Ellie Goulding the right door. She has pretty much everything at home to make an impression. Check healthy lifestyle, check out the door without hesitation for a workout, check huge dose of energy on stage and a tick for being absolutely beautiful without makeup and with freckles. Doesn't mean she doesn't like makeup, not at all, because she has collaborated with M.A.C Cosmetics so that we can all adopt the Ellie Goulding look.
So I got to interview Ellie Goulding about all that fun and beauty about half a year ago. After listening to about 380 of her songs (yes really, research takes some time) and googling whole biographies, I was very prepared. A bit nervous, because the more songs I listened to, the bigger my fandom became. Well, that all faded away when I saw her, because she was a superstar without superstar behavior, making it feel like I was chatting with my dearest friend. And that led to some really fun and interesting tidbits that make you want to have that entire collection at home right away.
Why this collection?
“I really have so many beauty products, all sorts of things and I find them all really fun, but they are all just little things. I actually like that the most important products really come together or are multifunctional. I wanted to create a makeup range that is super cool and fun, but also practical enough to wear every day. Hence those palettes that you can use for your eyes, lips, and cheeks and with which you can combine endlessly. I think that has worked out very well with the subtle, refined colors.”
The look of the season?
“Well, that's actually not it. The look of a season. I actually just think that it can be worn all year round because you can create different looks with it. You can go for effortless natural during the day or for sexy pop queen in the evening. All with the same products, it's just how you apply and combine it. There are some shimmers and sparkles in the products, but you can actually use those anytime. These are really products that I always wear. During the day, to the gym, and yes, also on stage.”
Favorite item from the collection?
“Ooh, tough question. They have all become very dear to me because they all really have a function and it took us a long time to bring the collection to life. I really like the bronze color from the eyeshadow palette because it matches my eyes and I use it for everything. Lips, cheeks, eyes, whatever else, and it fits. And the color is also very good for contouring. Oh, the brush is also really a favorite. You can blend everything perfectly with it. Oh yes, actually I have another favorite and that is the powder palette. You can use that for contouring, a bit of concealer, as setting powder, and as blush. I have quite an oily skin myself and therefore this mattifies nicely. For me, it's super handy because I always have a thousand things in my bag and one product is of course much nicer.‘
Trend-sensitive?
“Because I am such a proponent of natural beauty, I sound very boring, right? But no, I also really enjoy trying out new trends. I'm not afraid of a bit of edginess. It's actually wonderful to change looks often and adapt them to the phase you're in. Courtney Love and Gwen Stefani are really examples for me.”
Makeup tip?
“Less is more. Look at the strongest point of your face. If it's your lips, accentuate those and keep the rest calm. If it's your eyes, then make a work of art out of them and keep the rest in the background. Make the most of your best feature.”
Always in makeup?
“On a day with interviews and performances, I sometimes change looks up to ten times. I really enjoy it, but it also does something to your skin. On the days when I'm not on stage and actually don't have to go out, I prefer to do absolutely nothing. I'm normally really a girl-girl when it comes to makeup and I find makeup incredibly fun, but it's also good to give your skin a break.”
Beauty on stage?
“I understand that it seems like I use a lot more and different products on stage. That's not true. It's actually always the same, only under the light it looks very different. I always use a moisturizer with a soft shimmer in it as a standard. It hydrates and keeps the makeup very well in place. The powder is also very important. It's very subtle, stays put – even when you're jumping and dancing a lot – and can handle any kind of light. And, very importantly, all products are long-lasting, so they can take a beating.
People often say that you should wear a lot of makeup on stage, but that's really not the case. It's really about how you apply or combine it. A little extra lash is quite handy and you can also add a bit more to your eyeliner. But, in general, you can actually use quite little makeup because huge layers of sweat can easily wash it away. So I really love light makeup. The collection I designed together with M.A.C Cosmetics is actually very subtle and you don't need to use much of it to look stunning.‘
Natural beauty?
“I really find natural beauty very important. I once posted an Instagram photo where you could really see all my freckles and I received so many incredible reactions to it. I really think freckles are fantastic. That's why I think all the products, especially the foundation, in the collection are so good, because they give a glowy beautiful skin, but don't cover everything up. I actually want the collection to bring natural beauty to life. In the most beautiful way. I just don't understand why there aren't more photos posted on Instagram with natural beauty. It's just the most beautiful thing. Embrace it.”
Never leave the house without…
“I never leave the house without something on my lips. A cream, a lip gloss or whatever. Preferably in a pink color.”
Beauty icon?
“That would definitely be my mother. She's good with lips, eyeliner, and eyes and always looks good. She must have gotten that from my grandmother, also such an icon. She still has such good skin! She's 74 and wears makeup that makes her look the most beautiful. Oh, and they are also so good at it.”
