11x Why you want to sleep in the Pulitzer Hotel
It feels like a month ago, but two weeks ago we celebrated a party. In the Westerkerk. If you missed it (almost impossible), just click on this link . You're in. Anyway, a bit of a party comes with international guests. And they need somewhere to sleep. And if you're a top model who just waved goodbye to Mert & Marcus, you can't be tucked away in a Van der Valk. Then the best of the best is just good enough. So we knocked on the door of the Pulitzer. If they maybe... Yes, of course. Well, and if they maybe... then we also wanted to party sleep there for a night. And it was so addictively nice that I became the president of the fan club and I won't rest until you've slept there too. For these reasons.
1. The buildings
The Pulitzer is a collection of 25 canal houses from the Golden Age. If you find new construction a bit boring, you should be here, because here you trip over history. And you can take that quite literally sometimes.
2. The interior
Before the renovation, a South African architect took the building in hand. To fully experience the feeling of the hotel, he wanted to sleep in every room first (I would say the same) and then he got to work. Dark blue walls, purple sofas; it may sound a bit eclectic, but believe me: after a visit to the Pulitzer, you want to redecorate your home immediately.
3. The Bakelite phones
In every room, there is an old-fashioned phone, one of those Bakelite ones with a rotary dial and a curly cord. Très instagrammable and they actually work.
4. Santal 33
In the public restrooms, they are secured so that grabby guests don't let the soap bottle slide into their designer bag, but in your room, it's all about Le Labo. Don't know what Le Labo is? It's one of the exclusive perfume houses of Estée Lauder Companies and available in the Netherlands at Skins Cosmetics and Babassu. Absolutely delicious, but expensive. EXPENSIVE. The entire line is in your room. Shower foam, shampoo, soap, and conditioner. The whole list indeed ended up in my toiletry bag in one smooth motion. I have no idea how that happened.
5. The tiles
Now that we're talking about the rooms; the tiles in the bathroom are also grand. We're talking about the classic metro tile, but then a tumbled version finished with a glossy paint. Oh, and the mirror in the bathroom, it's mounted on the most beautiful weathered mirror glass. Did I already mention that you get renovation fever here?
6. Restaurant Jansz
Also beautifully decorated, but mainly the food is delicious. And you get Normandy (or was it Breton?) butter with your sandwich. You look out over a 9 Streets and feel like a tourist in your own city. Without sounding too much like you're ready for the clinic; there are a lot of bottles of white wine around so you can choose by the glass.
7. Crawl-through
Because all the buildings are connected, it's a crawl-through passage to find your room. Our room even had its own directional sign. Something different from those massive international chains. Here you feel unique because every room is different. You shouldn't be in a hurry, although there is always a friendly staff member to help you on your way or guide you to your room.
8. The bar
With cocktail shakers that work with eggs and such. And lots of small, dark corners where you can have good conversations without the other seeing the ladder in your pantyhose.
9. The garden
The garden! The garden! The garden! Suddenly a large garden in the middle of the city. With a swing with hanging chairs. And blankets. And lounge sets that you immediately want to have in your own garden. If they fit, of course.
10. The view
From my room then. Over the Keizersgracht. From a loft! A loft! I'm crazy about lofts. And about the Keizersgracht.
11. Because of Brad
He sleeps there, you know. Not all the time, of course, but when he's in Amsterdam, he does. I didn't hear that from the staff (because discreet) but from a friend who was at the reception. Then the friendly concierge said: ‘Brad Pitt is behind you.’ He laughed it off. But it was true. Brad was there. And did I already mention that the rooms are incredibly reasonably priced? Especially when you consider what you get in return? Gogogo...
