6x how to get rid of your hay fever

from your hay fever

The reason I couldn't live on a tropical island is not because I don't love sun, sea, and beach, but because I am immensely attached to this time of year. Spring feels in every way like a kind of new beginning. Everyone crawls out of their burrows, everything starts to bloom again, the birds are chirping again, and the temperature is finally rising again. I love it. But unfortunately, spring also means sniffles, itchiness, and coughs and sneezes. Hay fever, the terror. About a million Dutch people suffer from this terribly annoying allergy. The chance that you are one of those million is quite large. By taking these measures, you can postpone reaching for the tissue as long as possible.

1. Don't let the pollen inside

Nothing is nicer than throwing open the windows when spring is in the air. The smell of new leaves, freshly mowed grass, and the soft breeze; I love it. Unfortunately, that breeze is a dirty bastard. So keep your windows closed as much as possible and keep allergens out by doing the following:

  • Clean your house well, especially the things that attract a lot of dust. Air filters, bedding, upholstered furniture, and the carpet, for example.
  • Change your clothes as soon as you get home. Pollen tends to cling to fabrics, which allows them to spread in your home.
  • Don't have a dryer at home? Then let your freshly washed clothes dry inside and not outside.
  • Take a shower before you dive into bed at night. If allergens are transferred from your hair to your pillow, it can only get worse.

2. Visit the doctor

Make sure to stay ahead of the symptoms and go to the doctor in time. It's best to start medication before the pollen peak. Then you'll be prepared for next year.

3. Stay indoors

Avoid peak hours. Between five in the morning and ten in the morning, there are the most pollen in the air. Move your run to the evening and postpone your walk until late morning. Or get a mummy suit from the carnival shop...

4. Make your home mold-free

Not only pollen causes your hay fever, but mold can also trigger symptoms. So make sure to keep damp areas clean and mold-free. How do you do this? Remove mold from hard surfaces with water and bleach and ensure good ventilation.

5. Nasal irrigation

A nasal irrigation like the neti pot can relieve symptoms like sneezing, itching, headaches, and a tired feeling. Ask your doctor for more information.

6. Acupuncture

An alternative treatment like acupuncture can reduce allergy symptoms. Hay fever is related to a poorly functioning immune system, and acupuncture addresses the problems with small needles in the body. On average, about six treatments are needed to reduce or even eliminate the complaints.
