7x why everyone should see the musical The Bodyguard
The show has been solid for months and is constantly sold out. Totally deserved, I can't say otherwise. When Simone, Lilian, and I were invited to come watch the musical, we all nodded like happy eggs. That show had been on the list for a long time.
Okay okay I'm super biased because we also got to peek backstage and chat with the cast, which consists of Only Nice People, but honestly, I'm jealous of you if you haven't gone yet because girlfriend, you have a spectacular evening ahead. And so 7 reasons to book that ticket quickly:
1. For the strong story
Frank Farmer, a former secret service agent, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. And then suddenly a very complicated yet relatable relationship develops between the two.
2. For when you're torn between a concert by Beyoncé and Riri
Because The Bodyguard is a cocktail of both. The creators have dressed Whitney's songs in a delightfully hip musical outfit. The strange thing is that the music has been made a lot more modern (more upbeat + a nice beat), without you noticing that too much has been tinkered with.
3. For the climax at the end
Because let's face it, everyone wants to experience the Whitney Houston “AND IIIIEEEIEEEAAAAJ will always love YOUUUoeoeoeoeaaaandiiiii” at least once in their life. And it's sung so perfectly, it's unbelievable.
4. And also for the rest of the songs actually...
Especially because they are just sung nicely in English. God, it's so annoying when everything suddenly has to be translated into Dutch. “Ooooh, I want to dance with someone right now, I want to feel the HEAT with someone,” doesn't sound right? That's what I mean.
5. For the jump scares
Well, I'm not going to say too much about that, because you should experience it at your own (dis)comfort, but take my word for it: I felt the tension in the room multiple times.
6. For the bodyguard himself
He's tough. Strong. Sexy. But also closed off, which makes him mysterious and women really like that. As Simone subtly says: gosh, I'd love to work out with him. In bed.
7. For Sy Spector
Aka: Patrick Martens (in our case, because Ferry Doedens also plays the role), who is SO intensely funny that he immediately has his own musical + Oscar if it were up to us. He also showed us around backstage and we laughed so hard multiple times. What a brilliant guy.
You can tell: I'm lyrical and can't stop telling everyone how amazing this evening was. So come enjoy the Beatrixtheater in my hometown Utrecht, grab a bite beforehand (the truffle risotto in the theater is divine), then go to the show (You already have a first-class entrance ticket starting at 60 euros) and tell me how it was afterwards, deal?
