According to researchers, after so many

bed partners you find your true love

Ah, love – there are libraries full of it. Because in the end, we are all looking for that one who makes us forget all the others.

No. 5

But, uh, now we all secretly wonder: when do we find that Mr. Perfect? Well, research has been done. According to experts, your fifth sexual partner is your true partner. How does that work?

At least two thousand people were interviewed about their love lives. Most indicated that after having had four other relationships, wild nights, or flings, they could clearly think about what they were looking for in a man. So we find that experience in the game of love quite handy. Moreover, we ourselves have enough confidence after this number of bed partners to indicate what we are looking for.

Alright then. Just swipe right four times, date, jump into bed and voilà, we’re there. Easy peasy, right?

Or is it 500 million?

Yet we still wonder something. Because if everyone has one true love on this planet, how big is the chance that we actually meet them? Spoiler for the romantics among us: it’s disappointingly low.
We are about 7 billion people in this world. You have one person who truly fits you, and they are somewhere between Amsterdam and Swahili. Is there then a tiny chance that we will meet them?

In In the book ‘What If?’ Randall Munroe delves into this pressing question. For convenience, he calculates that you are only looking for someone who is at most a few years different in age from you. So someone who is a few years younger or someone who is a few years older than you. Then, uh, it’s still good searching, so to speak. It means you have about 500 million potential princes on white horses.
Suppose you meet several dozen new strangers every day, that’s a bit average. Of course, someone who always works from home, only exercises, and doesn’t often go out to eat, to name a few, meets fewer new people annually than a social butterfly. And take, for example, a police officer in Times Square: they see a lot of new faces on any given day. Anyway, on average, you get to know about 50,000 people during your life. Just divide, add, do some mental math… Voila. The chance that you find your one soulmate is then 1 in 10,000. In short: bizarrely small.

Give up? No way. There really are multiple suitable lids for every pot, you know. Luckily.

FACTS

  • On average, we have 8 bed partners before we settle down
  • 13 percent of women lie to their friends about the number of bed partners they have had
  • For 26 percent of men, good sex is the most important thing in a relationship (and if that’s not there, then they quickly cheat …)
