Woman in Business

Kristina Barricelli

Women in suits. If there is one outfit that I completely love when a woman wears it, it is this one. And I met with the lady who can best help you with this last week at the brand new SUISTUDIO store, where she is VP, to learn all about the company and what makes women in suits so powerful. SUISTUDIO, the female variant of the successful Suitsupply, has taken a while to arrive, two years in the making to be exact, but it is finally here and the company's vice president, Kristina Barricelli, shared all the ins and outs and why finding the perfect suit for a woman doesn't have to be stressful anymore.

‘Yes, it was indeed a two-year process, but if you strive for perfection, you have to take the time for it. Time for the right tailoring of suits, time to search for the best quality fabrics and materials, and time to create the best and right fit.’ Kristina explained that something that stood out to her was that when women were looking for something nice, they often chose high street brands and especially basic looks in black or dark blue that had no style at all. ‘It had to be easy to quickly grab and preferably something that didn’t require much investment. And that, that is precisely the pitfall.’

Fashion chains known for their ‘fast fashion’ lack the care with which women's suits are designed. At SUISTUDIO, that is different; a lot of attention is paid to what fit looks best on you, which fabrics you find most comfortable, and the prints that suit you well. Important to them is the personal service, whether in-store or online. And, also not entirely unimportant: in an era where sustainability is of great importance, you want to invest in an item that lasts longer, right? Whether you wear it with high heels and a nice body underneath for an event or trainers a turtleneck for a casual day at the office.

I often have the tendency to say that I dress like a tomboy, that I prefer to walk around in men's clothing and that, when there is an event, I immediately go for a suit instead of looking for a dress. But actually, actually this term should no longer be used, Kristina thinks, and I can’t help but agree. ‘Of course, there will always be certain pieces that belong in a women's wardrobe, but clothing (like the suit) should simply be universal and something you can walk around in, no matter where you work.’

Sophisticated with a fashionable character, that is SUISTUDIO. Timeless, so definitely worth the investment. Personal favorites of mine? This has been at the top of my Christmas wishlist since the opening of the very first store in Amsterdam:

  1. Cato Green Plain Suit, €349
  2. Joss Navy Striped Suit, €299
  3. Light Grey Overcoat, €259
