On vacation with such a little one is a different kind of relaxation than before... The piles of fashion literature are hardly touched (while I used to devour them all on the plane) and my book still lies unopened in the suitcase. So when Jon suggested that I should enjoy a massage at the Cinq Mondes Spa in Marrakech, I absolutely didn't need to be told twice. With a grin from ear to ear, I stood like an übertourist in my bathrobe and slippers, ready to dash to the spa. First, a quick visit to the hamam, and then, after a delightful 90-minute (!) massage, I walked completely zen towards the pool, only to find Jon slightly panicked with a crying and hungry Otis. ‘Just in time, that poor boy was almost starting to eat his own foot.’ In a few years, Otis can play happily in the Club Med kids club, so that mom and dad can read a few pages or take a little nap by the pool. Although I think we will want to pick up the little man after half an hour because we miss him so terribly...
Not even 24 hours after we returned to Dutch soil, our suitcase was already packed for our next trip. For JAN magazine, we traveled to Porto for a family shoot with my favorite photographer Roger Neve. Now, Porto wasn't high on my wish list, but after half an hour in the city, we were already in love. Beautiful steep streets, lovely architecture, and the Douro River where you absolutely want to take a walk. The weather also helped a lot: clear blue skies and 21 degrees (which, by the way, are winter temperatures for the Portuguese...) were the perfect ingredients to shoot our fashion series. I was very enthusiastic and proud of the solo shots I saw, but the photos with Jon and Otis are truly worth their weight in gold. In fact, the little one completely stole the show, and I had the feeling that everyone would prefer to shoot a solo series with Otis. Which I think he would be fine with, because in every photo he looks straight into the camera with an expression that is priceless. A new model is born?
Despite our lightning visit to Porto, I still want to give you a few tips that we discovered in that short time. What struck me the most were the ridiculously cheap prices (€11 for a three-course lunch!) and the super friendly service everywhere (which Amsterdam could still learn from...). Be sure to take a look at the harbor and eat at one of the fish stalls, where the fresh fish is prepared right in front of you on the barbecue. If you want to eat something fancier, Cafeína is an absolute must. I had the best chocolate cake of my life there. And believe me: I've tasted quite a bit...
What you also shouldn't miss is a ‘pastel de nata’, the Portuguese pastry with custard that you can find on the menu at all the bakeries and restaurants. And to catch a beautiful sunset, you absolutely must take a look at the chapel on the beach of Miramar: as if you've landed on a movie set, so unrealistically beautiful! Please share your Porto tips, because we want to go back as soon as possible to discover the rest of the city.
Last Sunday morning, I received a WhatsApp message from Barry: whether I wanted to take a toilet selfie during # World Toilet Day. At first, this sounded like a joke, but Barry is an ambassador for the Simavi foundation, which fights for clean and safe toilets worldwide. Something we take for granted in the Netherlands, but over 2.4 billion people here do not have access to, which can have fatal consequences (such as 280,000 diarrhea deaths per year). So I took a seat on our colorful toilet on Sunday morning and sent my toilet selfie out into the world to support this action. Hopefully, the foundation raised a nice amount to create more clean and safe toilets worldwide.
