Christmas cinema at home

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to relax on the couch under a warm blanket, with the lights on the Christmas tree and an overdose of snacks nearby. Actually, preferably on the couch with a gigantic food baby after eating a top meal from a star chef. The movie that always gives me nostalgic feelings is the Christmas movie of Garfield: A Garfield Christmas. You know, that red cat that always ate so much. This was a standard watch when I was young, but who said you always have to watch movies with a Christmas theme? You are free now, you have plenty of time to watch everything. Do you want to know my movie tips to create your own home cinema? Here they come:

Gladiator

Also a great choice if you have a long flight. Gladiator is always good, Russell Crowe is brilliant in this and you are constantly engaged, even if you have seen this movie before. If you want more Russell Crowe on your screen after watching it, don’t forget A Beautiful Mind. I always forget this one, but the story about the schizophrenic John Forbes Nash Jr. remains particularly beautiful.

The Hobbit 1, 2 & 3

You can enjoy these for a long time. They may have been made later than The Lord of the Rings films, but if you want to watch them all in the right order, you start with this.

All Harry Potter films

Feel free to take both Christmas days for this.

Finding Neverland

Tip from our Daan; a film inspired by Peter Pan featuring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet among others. Johnny plays the successful playwright Sir James Matthew Barrie, who unfortunately struggles with a creative slump. Then he meets widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her three sons, with whom he spends a lot of time and through whom his creativity begins to blossom again.

Everything with Hugh Grant

Lucky you, because this week there is also a sort of Hugh Grant week in the Netherlands with today obviously the editorial favorite on TV: Love Actually. But Notting Hill is also great with the free days you have now. What else you can add to your list: Four Weddings and a Funeral, everything from the Bridget Jones’s Diary series, About A Boy, Two Weeks Notice, and Sense and Sensibility. Christmas is not Christmas without a bit of Hugh in your life.

Saving Mr. Banks

Instead of watching Disney movies, you put on the film about the man himself: Walt Disney. Saving Mr. Banks is a real feel-good movie with Tom Hanks in the lead role, which is about his years-long project to obtain the rights to the book ‘Mary Poppins’ to make a film about it. But the author, played by the brilliant Emma Thompson, is not too keen on having her creation torn apart by Hollywood.

Hugo

This film is set in Paris in the 1930s and is about 12-year-old Hugo who lives in a train station in the French capital. His task? To ensure that the station clocks work. But then he comes into contact with a bitter old man who works in the toy store. Beautifully made, top cast, and also scores high in terms of feel-good factor.

Big Fish

If you are a fan of Finding Neverland, then put on Big Fish right after. The storylines are different, but it has everything to do with the imagination of stories, which has been brought to life in a fantastic way by Tim Burton. Exactly as we expect from him.

Intouchables

This one just had to be included in my opinion. It is the most beautiful story about a paralyzed man who builds a friendship with his caregiver. For the rest of the holidays, you will also spontaneously only play music by Ludovico Einaudi. Christmas music is bad for your health..

Happy holidays!
