KIKI'S WINTER WHERE ABOUTS

part 6

Just admit it. It's okay, I do it too. Since the whole month of December started, you've been out of sorts. Fatigue is setting in, you have little energy and actually want to binge-watch Netflix all day with a blanket over your head and eat calorie-rich food. Feeling a winter slump? I am. And every year, more than 500,000 people in the Netherlands feel the same. Fortunately, the world is wide, and there are always tropical summer spots where it's nice to stay in winter. Are you bringing the sunscreen?

The Republic of Seychelles, Africa

Hey, but this is the place where all those filthy rich footballers take their girlfriends, right? That's right. And who can blame them? Everyone should visit the Seychelles (a group of 115 different islands near Madagascar) at least once. Less than a third of the islands are inhabited. Of the over 92 thousand inhabitants, about 90 percent live on the main island of Mahé, which is roughly the same size as Texel. The Seychelles have white beaches, palm trees, an azure blue sea, and a stunning underwater world. A fan of diving and snorkeling? Then this is the place to be. Underwater, you’ll stumble over sea turtles, rays, sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species. Finding Nemo has never been so easy. On the beach, you can also spot bizarre creatures. The immense giant tortoises, weighing around three hundred kilos, casually stroll by you. Because the Seychelles are very remote, nature has developed differently here. Animals have never been hunted and are therefore not afraid of humans. That’s why the turtles and tree frogs just sit still when you take a picture of them. Fun fact: there are also twice as many turtles as inhabitants in the Seychelles. The average temperature in January is 27 degrees, which is why this dream destination absolutely deserves a spot on the Winter Where Abouts list. Since the Seychelles are close to the equator, the climate is practically the same all year round. The seasons don’t differ much from each other. It can rain heavily at times, but it clears up quickly and the sky is blue again.
