The wedding dress

The season has opened. It’s not even five o'clock yet, but we don’t care because the sun is shining, so we’re taking a season, but also the wedding season. Because that’s what we prefer to do in the sun. At this moment, thousands of women are hovering over their Pinterest mood boards where their perfect dress is displayed. In 90% of all cases, it is white. Hence the subject of my fashion lecture: the wedding dress.

What: The dress in which women say their “I do”. To quote Cheryl Moreiro: ‘You get married at most two, three times in your life.’ So there should be a nice dress that is made just for that occasion. As I said, it is in 90% of the weddings white. Now you think it has always been this way, but you are mistaken. The white wedding dress only became ‘en vogue’ after 1920. Before that, 'ordinary' women mostly married in black and wealthy women in colorful creations. White symbolizes the virginity of the woman, haha. But the real wedding dress should be accompanied by a white garter. Because after that 'I do', it’s naturally on.

Who: Aside from the real bridal fashion brands (I find that a very fussy word), almost every designer has a wedding dress in their repertoire. The wedding dress is often the highlight of the couture show. The pièce de résistance, because when women get married, they want to show off, and that is often the first (and unfortunately often the only) moment when a couture piece is an option. Vera Wang is an all-round designer, but her wedding dresses are beloved. For example, she chose Wendy van Dijk a Wang for her wedding to Xander de Buisonjé, which was canceled at the last minute. It hung unused in the attic for years, but when Wendy launched her magazine, she gave it away.

Does it cost? Yes, do you have a moment? Zeeman had one for 29 euros and 99 cents, and a couture dress by Jan Taminiau will set you back 25,000. The sky is the limit, let’s just say, you can make it as crazy as you want. But for 2000 euros, you can get a pretty nice Wang for your body.

My favorites: The first wedding dress I really registered was that of Lady Di when she married Charles. Then the tone is set nicely, and ‘more is definitely too little’ is the motto. I found Máxima stunning, although it was a bit on the modest side for me. So high closed with that standing collar. The Alexander McQueen of Kate Middleton received applause in the Mobach household. Amal Clooney's was exactly as you think it will be, and I believe I found Olivia Palermo's dress to be very close to an eight. Do you really want to know which one I found the ugliest? Really? That would be Angelina Jolie's dress that she had her children design. https://amayzine.com/nl/2014/de-trouwjurk-van-angelina-jolie/ . Idea: sweet, execution: medium.

But you know? Every woman I know would now choose a different dress than the one they chose years ago. Reason enough to get married again. Even if it’s with the same man. Just like Cheryl.
