Nienke Plas

My dear. That was actually the very first thing I thought when Kiki showed me a video of Nienke Plas Nienke Plas. But you just can't help but laugh. Laugh very hard. When someone spills everything out so extremely, you give applause. It's not surprising that she is nominated for The Best Social Awards (vote for Nienke here, just go ahead). And that's why we asked social comedian and YouTuber Nienke to spill the beans.

What was the first thing you thought when you heard you were nominated for The Best Social Awards?

“I was surprised. Actually, I’m never busy with which award is when. And then you think: oh yes, there are also people who get a prize for this. I have a nomination as the only woman among good male YouTubers, then you feel proud. You’re putting yourself in the spotlight.”

What is the most hilarious comment you ever received when you told someone you make videos?

“That’s from my own mother, her reaction to the second video with the 18-plus song about Ariel. Very nice, she said, but could the family see this too? And yes, the whole family has of course seen it.‘

“When you get a message from comedian Peter Pannekoek asking if I aspire to stand-up, that’s a compliment.”

How do you see the YouTube world?

“It’s remarkable how fast it can go. You can’t make an estimate in advance of how something will go, you just do what you enjoy. The viewers can be reached through a few buttons. But if you suddenly do something different than usual, people can sometimes react negatively.”

You don’t make a vlog, but a hahalog. When was your first time?

“The week breaker is a hahalog. My Shitty Diary is about weekly things, but in a different way. I poke fun at vloggers. I don’t find hardcore vlogging that interesting. The first hahalog came about when my boyfriend was out for the night at the W Hotel, just made for friends. The rumor was that Lady Gaga would perform. I called him that he had to come home now because I wanted to go. He thought it wasn’t true, so he stayed. The end result was that she gave an intimate living room concert. I posted it on Facebook and got so many nice reactions. It’s scary to do, for sure. You present something and people judge. I just hope that people laugh, but that can sometimes be frightening. When you get a message from comedian Peter Pannekoek asking if I aspire to stand-up, that’s a compliment.”

Is appearance important to you?

“I’m not going to lie. Of course, there are often enough shots where I think: that doesn’t look good. But I’ve also learned that you should be happy with how you look. There’s nothing more beautiful than a person who feels good in their skin. I dye my hair, I’m working on my appearance and I know that I’m getting older. I suddenly look for a boost for when you have skin aging. Even though I’m a no-lip-gloss girl, a lot fits with my Shitty Diary. It’s just how I present it.”

“Everything you put mayonnaise on is better.”

What do you eat non-stop if you wouldn’t gain weight?

“Salty things, chips, and fries. A fries war with onion and mayo. Everything you put mayonnaise on is better.”

What have you never done but absolutely want to do again?

“Record a song. I think I can sing well. The way I use my voice makes me think: this is legit.”

You are the face of RUMAG (also nominated for Best Entertainment Page), what is your favorite quote?

“The wish card with: ‘Congratulations on your alien, baby’. Mothers don’t see that a baby is ugly, there’s a filter over it. They do see it if they have a pointy head from a clamp, but through love, you see many more beautiful things. When the child yawns, it’s already magical, even though they all do that.”

What do you do when no one is home?

“Watch porn, haha. No, I’m a difficult porn viewer. I always think: ugly, ugly, ugly and lose interest. But when I can just sit down after working hard and watch a series, I’m happy. Preferably a documentary. Like the one about Michael Jackson, for example, I think he’s one of the best artists who ever lived. It has to be interesting, I don’t just randomly turn on the TV.”

No one knows this about you?

“I’m always very open, even in my videos. But maybe that I have flat feet. When I have to walk, you think a goose is coming. My son has them too, I’ve passed on all the good from myself. Together we will suffer.”

Who do you think is awesome on YouTube?

“Liza Koshy, an American. And I like to watch Jamie Li. She’s also a mom and has a lively life as a fashion reporter. Fred van Leer makes very nice content and is extremely funny.”

What are the first three hits when you Google yourself?

“Nienke Plas age, Nienke Plas boyfriend, Nienke Plas Resley, Nienke Plas child. All very private matters. People want to know everything about you.”

“One has billions that they will never spend in life and the other has twelve children in a hut made of camel dung.”

How is it to work with your boyfriend?

“Often fun and sometimes annoying. We are often together and complement each other. But sometimes you think: I don’t feel like you, just go home. But there he is and then he stays.‘

If your bag could talk, what would it tell us?

“Why do you always do so much to me, because you never take it.”

With whom would you like to swap for a day?

“Then I’ll go the airy heal the world route and want to be the boss of the world. Those people whose names we don’t know, behind the scenes. I’ll sit in the panel and say they need to act normal because something is not right. One has billions that they will never spend in life and the other has twelve children in a hut made of camel dung.”
