Rest in the chaos
Trying to keep all the balls in the air, a hundred tasks at the same time in your head, constantly switching from laptop to phone to iPad, from Facebook to mailbox to Instagram. Recognizable? I'm in the middle of the biggest time struggle of my life. How hard is it to really give yourself some rest?
For about six weeks now, I've been trying to steer my life in a different direction. More me-time. More time for a good book, a nice bath, fewer business and more private appointments with friends, and above all: less time on that phone. In all that rushing and flying around, we forget that time for ourselves is incredibly important. Perhaps the most important. The new Soul Safari collection from Specsavers hits the nail on the head. Now you might think: eh Kiek, what does a pair of glasses have to do with that? Well, everything. It's time to put on a different pair of glasses. One that literally enriches your view of life. Because aren't we all losing ourselves a bit in this hurried, online world? Time to stay true to the inner you. And Specsavers, I got your back when it comes to creating that calm in the chaos. And aside from a new pair of glasses in natural tones, there are also other little ways to do this:
1. Do one thing at a time
Yes, this sounds simple, but just try it. For example, try to focus only on eating that lunch or dinner and avoid other distractions. Become a monotasker instead of a multitasker and you'll see that you experience everything more consciously and intensely.
2. Away with the clock
The clock dictates our daily rhythm. And man, oh man, how we let ourselves be rushed by it. Take off your watch and leave your phone at home. Go relax, in ‘offline mode’, and listen to all the sounds around you. There's a good chance you'll perceive much more.
3. Meditate for at least 5 minutes a day
I've been doing it for a month now. For a very down-to-earth person who always found meditation a bit ‘airy-fairy’, I can tell you: oh boy, I was so wrong. Meditating is nothing more than just enjoying a moment of relaxation. And I have the science behind me: research shows that meditation calms your brain and makes you happier. With just five minutes a day, you can already notice improvement.
4. Walk in nature
Admit it: nature has a calming effect on you too. Who doesn't? If your mind is racing, especially seek out a nice park or forest, take a walk, go for a run, and observe all the details around you.
5. Make a sweet gesture
Small gestures have a big impact, yet they often get overlooked in our busy lives. Send a card, give a flower, or send a sweet message. Bet it gives you 100 percent more energy than it costs you?
