zomer in de stad
met Kae Sutherland
If someone Kae Sutherland spots Kae Sutherland on her Instagram (by the way, it turned out bizarrely well), we always get overly enthusiastic. Kae is one of a kind. A businesswoman, also creative and, yes, a huge beauty. All excuses to really grill her about her summer.
Kae, it's summer... What’s in your glass?
“Cloudy apple juice.”
Where do you settle when the mercury rises above twenty?
“Usually just cozy at the office. But on weekends, I prefer to drive to the Branding in Noordwijk or go for a nice picnic by the Amstel.”
Your secret favorite to absorb extra, extra hours of sun? Yes, we want your secret terrace.
“That’s definitely the terrace of restaurant Girassol. The nicest terrace in Amsterdam with the most beautiful sunset, right by the Amstel.
And what’s on your plate?
“What isn’t? Haha. You can share snacks and dishes here, so usually a large part of the menu. Stockfish croquettes, prawns, tortilla chips, fries, Pica Pau, piri piri chicken wings, and more Portuguese goodies.”
Which destination is on your ticket?
“I just got back from Sant Antoni de Collonge in Spain. My family is there for five weeks and I visited them over the weekend.”
The three ingredients you need for the perfect holiday?
“A lot of good food, my family and boyfriend or girlfriends. And now I wanted to say beach, but I’m actually a city girl. You make me happier with a week in Bangkok than if you put me on an island in a resort where you can only chill.”
What book are you reading this summer?
“Honestly? I’m not really a reader. I think I’m too restless and impatient for that. But I love flipping through magazines and I like to keep an eye on the news. When I’m home, I watch the news on TV in the morning and evening, and when I’m on vacation, Nu.nl is often open.’
And what’s coming out of your speakers?
“Everything! I love the top 40, haha. But also cheesy Spanish hits, Dutch hip-hop, Marco Borsato, Justin Bieber, James Morrison… Actually everything, as long as I can sing along off-key.”
Are you the tennis racket type or do your toes not come out of the sand?
“At the beach, you’ll find me in the sea. My nickname in the family is ‘water rat’. By the way, I’m not sporty at all, but I love games.”
Your tip for when there’s a long flight ahead?
“I wish I had one.”
How does your ideal summer day go?
“Breakfast in the sun. On vacation, I prefer a whole breakfast buffet. Then to the beach, have a big lunch at two, and then swim a bit, sunbathe, freshen up and change. First, we’ll browse some markets or shops and then we’ll sit down for a late-night dinner.”
And what do you immediately grab from the closet to wear when it’s finally warm?
“Long dresses and everything with cheerful prints.”
Where did you go on vacation as a child?
“The Club Med vacations with mom, they were always a party. Especially the ones with a circus, I hung around on a trapeze half the vacation.”
Are you a luxury type or do you go back to basics in a tent and be green by the campfire?
“I enjoy both, but I think I’ll go for the luxury vacation.”
What do you do in the summer that would never occur to you in the winter?
“Everyone is more outside. Now on a weekday, I pick up the phone at half past nine in the evening to call a friend for ice cream or to grab a terrace. In winter, that’s less, then you meet at home or in a restaurant.’
Are you team soft serve or team water ice?
“Definitely team soft serve! You can wake me up for chocolate ice cream. And especially the one from the ice cream shop ‘Het IJscuypje’. A cone with whipped cream, one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of banana. Hmmmmm.”
And do you have a juicy story about a vacation romance?
“Not really. I was fifteen when I met Diego and we’re still together. By the way, my first kiss was on vacation, but it was such a letdown, haha.”
