The most embarrassing ordering blunders

“I’ll have the cold tuna soup, I feel like it.” A man is sitting with his wife on a terrace in the French Dordogne. “Cold tuna SOUP?” “Yes, it says here on the menu: carpaccio de thon.” The worst ordering blunders, like this one, you just can’t make up. What do you think of this one?

Our colleague Sophie works for FavorFlav and serves at restaurant Scheepskameel. A customer came up to her and asked: “Where is the Viognier?”

Uh, sir. I think you mean the sommelier. The Viognier is a grape.

If you think it can’t get any crazier, it can. Another time she was asked about the ‘Somali’. Uh, sir. A Somali is a resident of Somalia. You mean the sommelier.

One more. “Let’s order a nice bottle of wine,” says one. “Yes, I’ve heard that the Chateaubriand is very good.”

“I don’t like Chardonnay. Can I have a glass of Chablis?” Dear people, Chablis is made from a Chardonnay grape. By the way, I really love Chardonnay and therefore also Chablis, and that says a lot about my character. Just read if you feel like it.

Once I heard a couple in the supermarket choosing a bottle of wine together. “We have to take this one,” she was sure. “This one is mis en bouteille.” Uh, that means it’s bottled in a bottle. As is often the case with wines.

Read more blunders (like the one about the ice that was too cold)? Then take a look at Sophie’s piece. And if you really want to eat well, go to Scheepskameel and ask if you can sit in Sophie’s area. The nicest and best waitress ever.
