The most feminist Disney movies
If you thought that Disney movies were purely and solely fairy tales for children, then it's time to revisit a few. Disney has been incorporating strong women into their animated films for years. It's been going on for years, but in the past year, it has had a sort of explosion. Read this piece Adeline's take on it. So, are you in the mood for some female empowerment today? Here are a few Disney movies with kick-ass female roles:
Aladdin
Princess Jasmine was a outspoken type, a true feminist who maneuvered in a man's world. An arranged marriage was not for her; she didn't want to be treated as an object. And did you know that Jasmine was also the very first princess who did not marry a prince?
Beauty and the Beast
Okay, I grew up with all the Disney movies in English, so I'm not quite sure what Belle says in the Dutch version, but in the English version, she opens the film by saying: ‘There must be more than this provincial life.’ This already shows that she is a girl with a larger and broader mind. Belle was also the first Disney princess who was clearly portrayed as intelligent, and despite the fact that there were many people who thought Belle suffered from Stockholm syndrome, the Disney team denied it.
Rapunzel
Hey look, a Disney movie where the girl saves a boy. Yes, okay, it's still with her hair, but hey, she helps him anyway. Princess Rapunzel escapes from the tower where she has been trapped for years, in search of adventure. Of all the Disney princesses, she was the first with superpower and also the first to really show what a feminist from the 21st century looks like (minus the superpower, of course, she got that as a bonus).
Mulan
Strong, brave, and resilient: that's Mulan in a nutshell. She shows that she can do what men can do and that the battlefield is not just for them.
Pocahontas
Pocahontas is the perfect example of a woman with a feminist soul and spirit; she is independent and always searching for her own purpose in life. This is also the very first Disney movie in which a woman starts a romance because of the importance of her own future.
Moana
A Disney movie without a male role that the lady falls in love with, that's something different from what we're used to from Disney. Also in terms of appearance, she may be the most realistic of all; Moana is not portrayed with a size zero. She is hardworking and does everything to protect ‘her people’, without help from a man. I love it.
