THE NICEST ORGANIC MARKETS IN amsterdam
I prefer to see the weekends in my agenda empty and without crosses. Long mornings in bed with a warm plate of oatmeal and my book, because yes, the gym does sleep in on the weekend. After my workout, I throw a big bag over my shoulders on Saturday, hop on my bike, and go in search of one of the many organic markets in Amsterdam. I can spend hours there, browsing among the fresh goat cheeses, fresh (and often still warm) sourdough breads, and fair lamb chops. I love to go all out with coarse nut rolls, warm baguettes, farmer's cheeses, organic beets in all colors of the rainbow, and organic steaks. But since I still haven't run into Mr. Right and therefore have to eat everything alone, I stick to a mountain of vegetables and fruit, a single coarse sourdough roll, and a series of bottles of fresh goat yogurt from the farmer. And well, a cheese platter for one is fine, so hats off, some fragrant samples are coming along too.
Do you have a lazy Saturday but want to dive into the kitchen later? I've lined up the nicest organic markets in the city for you. Here you can shop for everything you need for a cozy dinner at home with friends or just with your loved one.
1. Nieuwmarkt
Lucky bastard that I am, there's an organic market just around the corner. So I can just roll out of bed on Saturday and go get all kinds of delicious fresh things. Fresh goat yogurt, organic blueberries, and freshly roasted nuts for breakfast. A regular treat is a fresh field bouquet from my flower friends. You can find them diagonally opposite the Appie at a corner behind the nut stall.
This organic market is not the largest in Amsterdam, but you can get everything there.
Where: Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam.
When: every Saturday from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
2. Buikslotermeerplein
If you live in North, this farmers' market is a must-do. At Buikslotermeerplein, you can find all your vegetables and fruit, fresh cheeses, and fair meat from farmers in Amsterdam and the surrounding areas.
Where: Buikslotermeerplein, Amsterdam.
When: every Saturday from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
Website: boerenmarktnoord.nl.
3. Noordermarkt
One of the first and coziest farmers' markets in Amsterdam is the one at Noordermarkt in the middle of the Jordaan. You can find everything to fill a nice charcuterie board or the fruit basket or to prep lunch boxes. Grocery shopping should be rewarded. Go to Winkel for the tastiest apple pie and a good cup of coffee.
Where: Noordermarkt, Amsterdam.
When: every Saturday from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
Website: boerenmarktamsterdam.nl.
4. Zuidermarkt Amsterdam
In addition to the standard stalls, you will also find a neighborhood exchange stall at the organic neighborhood market in Oud-Zuid where you can buy products from local residents. These are often homemade cookies, cakes, or jams. I find that the absolute best.
Where: Jacob Obrechtstraat, Amsterdam.
When: every Saturday from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
Website: zuidermrkt.nl.
Hey lazybones, are you reading this and is it already five o'clock? Then you can always go to Landmarkt, Marqt, or Bilder & De Clercq.
