This is how you wear makeup to a job interview
Monday, December 5. I wake up. Slept well? No. Nervous? Quite. Has my outfit been ready on the hanger for a week? Oh, hell yes. If you’re thinking: ‘wow, why is she so nervous for Sinterklaas’, nope. I have an interview at Amayzine. And well, then that dear old Saint is just child’s play. Ready? Check. I’m ready to show them what I’ve got. Or rather, that’s what I thought…
With wet hair and a pale face, I sat on my bed staring into space; I hadn’t thought about this. What the hell am I going to put on my face? The winged eyeliner from my daily ensemble or are my eyes too dark? Maybe my dark red lipstick, which shows that you have confidence. Or is it too much? Panic, panic, panic. I went for as neutral as possible. A bit of foundation, eyebrows in shape, and some mascara. The wing and lipstick stayed at home because less is more.
A job interview is scary and preparations are a must. To help you get rid of last-minute stress, I have the ultimate tips for the perfect makeup for you. I wish I had known this myself…
- Give yourself some extra time for that beauty routine. Do you have an interview in the morning (by the way, this is the best time, read here for a moment)? Then get up on time. You stay calmer when you have hours. And you also have a buffer in case something doesn’t go quite right.
- In the meantime, turn your speakers up to maximum volume with some songs that boost your confidence. For me, ‘Worth it’ by Fifth Harmony or ‘Rockstar’ by Rihanna work. And sing along really loudly, okay?
- Please don’t experiment with new makeup and tricks. With all those nerves, it can only go wrong. And then you’re firstly pressed for time and secondly already feel like you’ve failed. Seriously, don’t do it!
- Do you suffer from the I-blush-very-quickly-when-I’m-nervous syndrome? Yep, me too. But after years of embarrassing red-cheek moments, I’ve learned that a bit of green primer under your foundation is the savior in need. And take it easy with that blush.
- Keep.it.natural. If you show up with a rainbow on your eyes, there’s a good chance the person interviewing you is too busy checking your makeup. And it’s about your answers, right? A bit of mascara is enough. If you really want eyeshadow, go for a light color that matches your skin.
- Is lipstick your greatest love? Then it can be worn, but be careful that it doesn’t get stuck on your teeth. The horror. Choose a soft shade.
- A bit sneaky and next-level stalker, but if you’re not sure what suitable makeup is for the company you’re interviewing for, look up some people who work there. Check out their LinkedIn page (in private mode, of course), Instagram, or Facebook. Do you think I didn’t stalk all our editors to the max before I went for the interview? Ha, yes I did. And not just a little bit.
- A bit corny maybe, but just be completely triple nice yourself. You need to feel good in your skin and not pretend to be someone you’re not. You’ve already scored that interview, so show your lovely self and it will all be just fine.
You’re welcome. And once you have that job in the bag, then your makeup can be in party mode. Pop the champagne and party all night like the boss you are. Or the employee then.
