This is how you make a small house big
(5 easy peasy tips)
With about sixty square meters in the minus, I can say that I live smaller. Not tiny and in Amsterdam terms even enormous, but still smaller. Therefore, the challenge to conjure the most space out of that living area. It’s possible, because there are smart tips to make your house feel like the Grand Palais (where May was, read our suggestions here)? I'm meanwhile scrolling through the first of the Monate like an addict through Elkes Nieuwsflix, but nothing, zip, nada. Even Netflix is acting suspicious... Quiet then. I want a sequel to my favorite and I want it now. But with a chronic shortage and the absence of rattling conversations, just saying).
1. Light
Did you know that those Pinterest palaces have a lighting plan? Yes, that exists. By lighting a room correctly, it feels more spacious. A table lamp here, a spotlight there, some atmosphere in the corner... Work with levels. This way, you highlight every centimeter. Don’t just stick to a table lamp (even though they are cute, check this one out), but invest in a nice lamp above the table or a standing piece in the corner.
2. Air
If your furniture goes up a few centimeters with legs, the room gets more air. Literally and figuratively. Think of it as wearing a good heel, it makes you less pompous too. Another good idea: make sure to have a large mirror against the wall. An age-old trick, but optically it makes your living room seem larger.
3. Palette
Afraid you can only leave the hardware store with a bucket of RAL 9001? Thank god, no! Living small gives you options. Grab the color fan, choose a cool color, and if you also go pastel, plus you’re in the meters. Here By the way, you’ll find five more tips that will help you.
4. Flooring
A poppy Moroccan tiled floor, parquet laid at an angle, a rug for warm feet... Your house will be filled with flooring in no time. Choose just one and lay it in all rooms (so without thresholds or door sills). This gives a spatial effect of infinitely many meters.
5. Think big
Don’t fill that dollhouse with tiny furniture or trinkets; think big, spacious, and practical. I have one long, low cabinet throughout my living room. It functions as a couch, resting place for my television, and is the stage for my vase with peonies, candles, and the old-school typewriter. Going for green? Choose a plant of size. These are the cuties of the jungle.
