Summer In The City

with Sophie Jorissen

In the category: what are the cool girls of Instagram up to in the summer, today it's Sophie’s turn, also known as Sophiemay, formerly known as Radish to Wear. Look, Sophie is, in my opinion, a triple threat: she is drop-dead gorgeous, smart, and has an overdose of humor that guarantees you will never have a dull moment with her. And oh yes, she is also part of Team Wandeldate. By the way, her insanely beautiful Gucci bag is coming along too. But hey, it's summer and I happen to know that this lady is currently making the streets of The Concrete Jungle unsafe, but Soph, tell me: what else are you up to this summer?

What's in your glass?

‘Rosé.’

Where do you settle when the mercury rises above twenty degrees?

‘I often go back to my roots: Leiden. And then with the whole family to the beach in Noordwijk. Eating sea bass at Branding, with rosé of course. Another option is the park. Nice picnicking with friends!’

Your secret favorite spot to absorb extra, EXTRA hours of sun? Yes, we want your secret terrace.

‘It’s not a terrace, but a patch of grass by the Amstel where you can chill mega comfortably and escape a bit from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. There is a terrace nearby called Thuis aan de Amstel. Google that and you’ll find my secret chill spot!’

And what’s on your plate?

‘Usually something fishy, can’t live without it!’

Which destination is on your ticket?

‘For now NYC and Berlin, but there’s a chance I might suddenly fly to Bali at the end of September.’

The three ingredients you need for the perfect holiday?

‘Sun, sea, and beach. I’m so simple in this. Can I add a fourth? A good book!’

What book are you reading this summer?

‘I read quite a lot. Right now I’m reading ‘De Doodsvogel’ by Samuel Bjørk. A mega exciting book. But if you have any tips, I’d love to hear them!’

And what’s coming out of your speakers?

‘Ah, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. No music, no life, you know.’

Are you the tennis racket type or do your toes not come out of the sand?

‘Can it be a combo? I prefer to sport every day, but I can also chill really well.’

Your tip for when there’s a long flight ahead?

‘Try to sleep. Ordering a red wine often helps, but usually, I just put on an acoustic playlist and then I’m out.’

How does your ideal summer day go?

‘It depends. I’m really a huge family person, playing with my little nephews in a silly inflatable pool is the best. But if I can end that day with my friends on the terrace, then it’s really complete.’

And what do you immediately grab from the closet to wear when it’s finally warm?

‘Usually those basic tank tops from Brandy Melville, for example. Without a bra, because those things are way too warm.’

Where did you go on vacation as a child (what is your fondest memory of it)?

‘I think my fondest memory was camping in Brittany with my brothers and parents. I fell in love for the first time when I was six – that guy was 30. But that’s another story.’

Are you a luxury type or do you go back to basics in a tent and be green by the campfire?

‘I can do both quite well. I really appreciate luxury, but put me with the right, inspiring people and I need nothing but their stories and a crackling campfire.’

What do you do in the summer that would never occur to you in the winter?

‘Haha, I go out way more in the summer than in the winter. I just can’t stand the cold. The only thing I want then is to sleep and cocoon.’

Are you team soft serve or team water ice?

‘Water ice! Unless it’s the extra dark flavor of IJscuypje . That is EVERYTHING.’

Your most delightful/funniest/hilarious memory of a holiday romance?

‘Hahaha, I think my first love when I was six, a Frenchman. His name was Cederic, I saw him and couldn’t stop staring. He was a deep-sea diver and I got to make my very first dive with him. Then he also gave me a big mother-of-pearl shell, I was done for. I think I believed until I was twelve that we would get married.’
