Tips for menstrual pain

Once a month, almost all of us have to deal with it: a visit from the painters, or the monthly oil change. And you either cycle through it effortlessly as if nothing is wrong, or you have such hellish pains that you think the world is ending. Do you belong to the latter group? Then these 12 tips are for you. This is how you survive that one week of the month without becoming a sweetheart the victim...

1. A warm water bottle

Your mother probably did it before, but it really helps, that warm water bottle against your belly or lower back. The warmth of the bottle provides relief from the pain. But yes, you can also look at your sweetheart and let him cuddle up against you...

2. Blood sugar level

When your blood sugar level remains stable (among other things by avoiding quick carbohydrates), you will have less trouble with sugar dips that make you crave sweets again and again.

3. Avoid sugar and caffeine

These two ingredients are better avoided during your menstruation, as they can worsen your symptoms.

4. Eat healthy

Since your body is already a bit confused, it is important to get healthy food. So make sure your fridge is nicely stocked with greens. Okay, and ice cream in the freezer.

5. Get enough sleep

Go to bed on time, especially if you have to get up early the next day. By crawling under the covers a bit earlier, the urge for a late-night snack is also solved.

6. Move

It may not seem logical, but it is good to do some movement when you feel a bit meh during your period. Physical exertion stimulates the production of endorphins, which helps against depressive feelings. It doesn't have to be a heavy workout; on the contrary. Just relax for an hour on the yoga mat or go outside. Daylight helps produce serotonin.

7. Healthy fats

The Omega 3 fats found in fresh (fatty) fish are super healthy. Research has shown that Omega 3 fatty acids can reduce menstrual pain. If you don't eat fish, get it from supplements or throw a spoonful of chlorella, spirulina, or chia seeds into your smoothie.

8. Sex

You might prefer not to let your sweetheart go through that red sea, but a little fun between the sheets can help. During sex, your muscles relax, which can help relieve the pain.

9. Magnesium

Magnesium helps prevent the cramps you feel during menstruation. Take magnesium as a supplement or take a bath with magnesium salt.

10. Massage

Hand your sweetheart a bottle of massage oil and let him massage your lower abdomen. Being on your period does have its advantages.

11. Herbal tea

Chamomile tea reduces pain when you have cramps. Lemon balm, fennel, and marjoram are also known as calming herbs. Tip: use them a few days before your period is due.

12. Chocolate

What more can I say? Tony is your best friend. Especially now.
