WHY YOU SHOULD BOOK A TRIP TO LESVOS NOW
Five days in Greece. You're crazy if you say no to this, right? So last week I flew to Lesvos with Zoover. Check this Just in case you want to know what I learned from the Greeks. But before I tell you about all the beauty the island has to offer, the refugee issue also needs to be mentioned. Because yes, those refugees are still there, currently around two thousand. And in a period of a year and a half, about half a million have been on the island.
And the refugee issue has also had a significant impact on the island and its inhabitants. Tourism has dropped significantly because the people on the island have had to suffer greatly from all the negative attention on Lesvos. And that's why it's also good to highlight all the beauty of the island. Because don't forget: fewer tourists also mean less income, making it difficult for the residents to do anything for the refugees.
So, if you still don't know where you want to go this summer, I'm telling you: Lesvos is where you want to go. You're there in a few hours and sunshine is guaranteed. And if you like it, here are my favorite places on the island:
Molyvos
Perhaps my favorite spot on the island and also my home for the first three nights. This town is exactly what you expect from Greece: picturesque streets, a beautiful harbor, and located on a hill giving you a stunning view of the sunset. Believe me, golden hour never looked so good. Dinner tips: Gatos (perhaps with the most beautiful view of Molyvos) and Chtapodi, which means octopus. And yes, they are at their tastiest here.
Sigri
Sigri is located in the west of the island. Think of a typical Greek view with white houses, clear blue waters with a sailboat here and there, and a touch of the Netherlands with the most beautiful windmills on the island. For all history buffs; there is also a museum about the island's natural history here.
Sykamnia
By far my favorite spot on the island in terms of view. I call it the Hamptons of Lesvos. This village by the water is known as a vacation getaway for the island's residents. It feels like you’ve landed on a movie set, it’s that beautiful. Freshly caught octopus hanging in the sun, old Greek fishermen sitting in a row in the shade after a morning at sea, and the blue and white checkered tablecloths at the restaurants. Are you on the island? This place is a must. And don’t forget to order the octopus.
Eressos
‘A popular beach for lesbians,’ it said in our schedule. But you know, it’s recommended for everyone. A beach full of different restaurants and cafes where you get the ultimate vacation feeling. My tip: eat at Belle Ville.
Agiassos
Once again a picturesque village on the island, this time found on Mount Olympus. Here, the Mariakerk is especially famous where we, when we were on the island, also experienced a traditional baptism. There is also a big celebration here every year on August 15 in honor of Saint Mary, where residents not only from Lesvos but from all over the world pay tribute to her.
