Women with a gay bestie are happier

Do you have a gay bff by your side? Lucky you.

This week it's time for Gay Pride again in Amsterdam and what turns out? You are happier as a woman if you have a gay best friend. Researchers from the University of Texas have proven that when you have a gay buddy, you are generally happier. This is mainly because your gay buddy can give honest and sincere relationship advice. Or advice about other girlfriends, because he is of course a bit outside of that. Girlfriends can be a bit quicker to get jealous and therefore not be sincere.

And heterosexual men asking a man for love advice as a woman? We actually prefer not to do that. We are more likely to take tips and tricks from a gay buddy than from a heterosexual, ‘regular’ friend. It also seems to be good for your mood if you have a gay friend walking (or dancing) next to you. He has – on average more than other friends – a cheerful influence on you. Top-notch humor, you two, and rarely grumpy or not in the mood for a fun outing. It's the positive, rainbow-colored, cozy cherry on your life's cake.

A gay best friend is also, according to scientists, a bit more straightforward than your female friends. This way you generally get to hear an honest opinion, even if you sometimes don't want that. Even if it's about your new flame, your job or that new shirt. But in the long run, you benefit more from that than from people who just chat along with you and sell you nonsense.

What do I think of this research? I definitely have a best friend who is into guys and I can assure you: it's not only a blast, it's also real friendship. Laughing and crying, checking out or ogling guys, vacations together or dinners at our favorite restaurant: never a dull moment. So I know who I'm going to tag in this message. He deserves it.

Happy Pride!
