18+ only: Slush Puppies with alcohol
When I (back in the day, when I was little, which I still am by the way) ordered a slush puppy on my toes at the local fries stand, I chose blue. Not because I liked it better than the red one, but because your tongue turned such a nice color. These slush puppies don’t do that, but maybe that’s safer. A brilliant invention, I think, the slush puppy with booze. Cheers!
Boozy slushies are all the rage. At least, in the United States. You can’t walk into a trendy club, bar, or restaurant without seeing one of those ridiculous machines on the bar. And to be honest: just the sight of it brings up intense childlike joy. Your mind tells you that they surely don’t sell real slush puppies at this place. That there must be something going on. And that’s true: they pour liters of wine or spirits into them. Boozy slushies then. What’s not to like?
Boozy slushies and milkshakes
Where we can find the boozy slushies in the Netherlands is still not entirely clear to us, so for now we’ll just indulge in the boozy milkshakes at TonTon Club West in Amsterdam. Fortunately, you can easily make your own boozy slushies; you don’t actually need a machine for that. A freezer, a rectangular container, and a bit of patience will suffice.
Make it yourself?
First, think about what kind of boozy slushie you’re going to make. Experiment with what you already have at home or get inspired by one of these cocktail recipes. Want to make it really easy for yourself? Then go for a combination you already know, like the good old gin and tonic, mojito, or Black Russian. And if you’re going for the frosé? Use a strong rosé. A Pinot Noir or Merlot usually works well.
Here’s how you do it:
Pour the drink and any other ingredients into a container and place it in the freezer for at least six hours. Stir your slushie to be well every 2/2.5 hours. Because it contains alcohol, you won’t get a block of ice but a container full of ice crystals. After about six hours, you’ll have the perfect boozy slushie. Easy does it. Serve in nice glasses, garnish with fresh fruit, and stick in a nice thick straw. Happy summer!
