7x why singing is good for you
Tonight we're going to enjoy some Voice again. And let's be honest: do you sing along too? And do you sometimes think that somewhere inside you there is a Whitney Houston? At least when it comes to singing. You just need the right coach to bring out your talent. I always think that. That a singer has been lost in me. Just ask my colleagues who witnessed our karaoke Christmas sessions. They may not confirm my talent, but they will acknowledge my passion for singing. And all that fun, that's exactly what it's about. Singing is good for the human being. And here's why.
1. You work on your abs
If you put in a little effort and breathe well, you train your abs tremendously. If you add a little Mariah Carey flair (so dramatically enhancing your ad lib visually with your hand), you also train the chicken fillets on your upper arms.
2. It's healthy
Because you breathe deeply, you take in more oxygen, your lungs work better, and your fitness improves.
3. Singing makes you happy
When you sing, oxytocin is released. That's the cuddle hormone that you also produce when you pet a dog (that's one of the compelling reasons why it's a good idea to get a dog) or when a mother breastfeeds.
4. Singing makes you look younger
What also reveals your age? Your voice. Well, when you sing, you train your lungs and keep your voice sounding young, making everything seem younger than if you go through life with a raspy voice.
5. You are fitter
When you sing, you also produce endorphins, making you feel more energetic and cheerful.
6. When you sing, you get sick less often
Seriously. Not only because you are more energetic, but also because there is a higher concentration of antibodies in your saliva after singing. It's been researched, so it's true.
7. And you catch colds less quickly
Also something like that. Bacteria settle less quickly in your nose and throat (you blow them out while singing), which means you get colds less often.
It may sound a bit elderly, but it seems to be particularly good to sing together. We'll save that choir for Christmas, but diving into the karaoke bar soon seems like a great plan. Maan? Kim? When are we going? (Just read here what wonderful anecdote lies behind this...)
