A standing ovation for Maan please

When Wim Sonneveld sings it, I don't see my father's garden path, but that of my grandparents. Along the garage, around the back, and grandma waving at me through the gap in the curtains. Shoes on the mat by the back door, a kiss for grandma, a kiss for grandpa, and the steaming pot of pea soup on the table, covered with deep plates on a tablecloth. Recently I went back, the village was different. Smaller than I remember. There had been construction. Grandpa and grandma no longer live there.

Maan sang yesterday Het Dorp by Wim Sonneveld on De Wereld Draait Door. And what happened? She received a shitload of comments on Twitter. Because a few sour viewers (read: whiners) were not exactly pleased. But guys, girls, Maan is not a middle-aged man reminiscing about his village, Maan is a twenty-one-year-old woman who thinks of home and her mother when she hears Het Dorp, because this is one of her favorite songs. Maan performs the song beautifully, sweetly, and a little bit small. Maan appreciates what Wim Sonneveld sang. Let's be honest, I was listening to the trending tracks on my way home yesterday and when I heard the number one, I had to cry a little inside. Something with Bizzey and Yung Felix. It's damn worthy of applause that Maan sings Het Dorp. Just think about that before you throw all that sour commentary out there. Just take a look for yourself, starting from two minutes and forty seconds.

And out of sentiment: Het Dorp by Wim Sonneveld.
