Body & Mind

Forget that hipster breakfast, we're going for old school

Where we are flooded with hipster breakfasts like dragon bowls, acai bowls, smashed avo on toast, and mug cakes, you make me intensely happy with a breakfast from wayyy back. Do you remember Weetabix? Simple, super quick to prepare and intensely nutritious. Yet the box stands there in the supermarket all alone; between the oatmeal and the muesli, the poor child gets little attention. Our British neighbors, on the other hand, breakfast en masse with the fiber-rich stuff. And I understand why. Take this with you in your basket next time, because a good start is half the work...

1. Quick Weetabix with banana and almond

2 blocks of Weetabix
1/2 banana
splash of almond milk
spoon of low-fat yogurt
cinnamon
maple syrup

  1. Warm a little almond milk in a saucepan.
  2. Put the almond milk in a bowl and place the Weetabix in it.
  3. Slice the banana and place it along with a spoon of yogurt on the Weetabix.
  4. Top off with some cinnamon and maple syrup.

2. Chocolate-coconut bars with Weetabix

For the bars
150 grams of oat flour
4 blocks of Weetabix
85 grams of grated coconut
100 grams of dates
100 grams of melted butter

For the topping
piece of dark chocolate
extra coconut flakes

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and line a baking dish with baking paper.
  2. Soak the dates in hot water, pat them dry, and then blend them finely in a blender.
  3. Mix the flour with the coconut, the dates, and crumble the Weetabix.
  4. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter. Stir everything well together.
  5. Press the mixture firmly into the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes until done. Let cool.
  7. Melt the chocolate in a bain-marie.
  8. Spread the chocolate over the baking dish, sprinkle with coconut, and place the baking tray in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
  9. Cut into equal pieces.

3. Weetabix toast with Greek yogurt and blueberries

2 slices of Weetabix
2 tbsp Greek yogurt
handful of cherries (available in the freezer section of your supermarket)
1 tbsp sliced almonds

  1. Heat the cherries in a saucepan.
  2. Place the Weetabix in a deep plate and spread 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt over it.
  3. Top off with the warm cherries and some almond flakes.
