Burnouts are passé
we all have a bore-out
Complaining about being oh so busy and working from 7 to at least 9 every day: don't. Because it's no longer hip.
Whereas before it was cool and cool to grumble and sigh about that overflowing diary, currently hard work is no longer so cool. Burnout is now giving way to the so-called bore-out. Burnout is when you constantly work too hard, are stressed by your job and never even take a moment to rest. Bore-out is now suddenly more interesting for psychologists. You can get one if you are busy - but also if you are very calm.
Now what is the case? Millennials, yes, those born between 1980 and 2000, have quite a lot to put up with. In fact, they get bored faster than any other generation. In fact, they suffer from those bore-outs. That's because the options are endless, now that the millennial is an adult. Not only can they choose from 9214 different studies and internships, after that the jobs are there for the taking. And that causes anxiety. Because is this really the job they dreamed of all those years? Is this really the life they envisioned, as children? Doubt strikes. They suddenly don't know why they are even doing this job. They want to quit, because they are bored. They are super bored.
It has been researched how this comes about. For instance, experts argue that people of this age were raised just a tad differently. Before, you felt the pressure to finish a degree and just went to work at an office job like everyone else. Now, parents teach their children from an early age that anything is possible. That you can also travel a bit, if it makes you happier. That you don't have to work from 9 to 5 every day if that doesn't suit you. That you can become anything you want, yes, even a ski instructor. Or a journalist.
In addition, social media have influence. We think we have to live the perfect life - because on Instagram it seems like everyone has that perfect life. Except you. You sit there at that boring crap job behind your desk, dusting away. Besides, we have less patience than we used to. Now, if we don't like one subject during training, we quit. You can do something better with your time and you can still choose from 9213 other courses. For millennials, it's all more about the short term. We are mindful - to the point of irritation. Because we only live in the now. Is work boring today, then I should look further. Disappointments? We no longer have time for that or feel like it. Then we look for something else.
So it's a bit down to this generation. It's possible, it's not bad. But don't forget to stay a little realistic every now and then. Not every day is rainbows and butterflies. Remember: without friction no shine. So I am sometimes just plain old-fashioned happy with a boring bad day.
