Body & Mind

Hello hay fever!

Yes indeed, it's that time again. Actually, I shouldn't complain at all, because I've really enjoyed the nice weather over the past few days. But if, like me, you spend a few weeks each year coughing and sneezing through life, you know that those first spring tingles also come with dry eyes, an itchy nose, and a lot of sneezing. Hello hay fever. And as if a runny nose, a marathon of sneezes, and those itchy eyes aren't bad enough, that misery can also make it so that you hardly sleep. And it's not your fault, my friend. Allergies worsen during the nighttime hours. Just like I'm a hay fever victim? Unfortunately, I don't have a miracle cure. But I do have a few things to keep in mind before you get into bed tonight.

Lying down worsens congestion

Unfortunately, it's true: as soon as you hit the pillow and have a stuffy nose, it will only get worse. Due to the anatomy of your nose and throat, everything actually flows from your nose down to your throat. This will make you cough more and you'll find it harder to breathe than when you're standing upright. So, place an extra pillow under your head so you lie a bit more upright.

Dusty bedroom

There are no more pollen at night than during the day, but it may be that your bedroom contains a lot of dust, is damp, or even has a bit of mold here and there. So make sure to ventilate your bedroom enough, avoid carpets, and clean the floor as often as possible. And if you really want to do it right, get an air purifier in the house.

Sleep buddy

It's way too cozy, of course, falling asleep with your furry friend next to you, but it does nothing to help your sneezing or itchy nose. The fur of four-legged friends is an absolute allergy magnet. Better for Vlekkie to just sleep in his own spot in the living room.

Breeding ground

Pollen collects in skin, hair, and clothes. A refreshing shower before you hit your pillow and wearing clean pajamas more often works wonders.

Fake tears

I already think the name is brilliant. A golden tip from my colleague. Buy fake tears (just at your pharmacy), keep them next to your bed, and drop them as soon as you have dry eyes. Wonderful!
