Ingredients that age faster than you

A round trip to the fridge and I am two eggplants, half a bag of lamb's lettuce and one lemon poorer. Far beyond the best-before date or not as fresh as it all felt at the checkout. But these six ingredients will even help you survive, say our colleagues from FavorFlav.com, who know a thing or two about food.

When you go on vacation, you can stress about all the food that’s going bad at home. At least you won’t stress about these six products, because they always stay good.

Soy sauce

Although the strong flavor of soy sauce, which we all love, will definitely go downhill if you leave it in your pantry forever, it doesn’t spoil. There’s so much sodium in soy sauce that it’s practically impossible for bacteria to settle in it. So that expiration date on the bottle mainly applies to your taste buds.

Honey

Honey doesn’t spoil; it crystallizes. Or rather, the sugar in the honey crystallizes. You can keep it forever if you’re okay with that. Because there’s little moisture in honey, bacteria have little to no chance to grow.

Sugar

Just like with honey, but even more clearly, there’s no moisture in sugar. That’s also the only way to keep it good forever: keep moisture away.

Salt

Salt is a preservative in itself, so you can keep it for a long time. As long as you keep it dry.

White rice

White rice proves itself to be the best variant. Brown and whole grain rice can only be stored for half a year, but white rice indefinitely. This is because it is processed further and thus simply has less present (like fatty acids) that can spoil.

Pure vanilla extract

Is made from alcohol, so you can keep it forever. The flavor may become a bit stronger, but is that really a problem…?
