Kitchen cabinet remedies for when you're sick

At the first pain or sting, we are quite quick to reach for the packs of paracetamol, ibuprofen, or the bottle of nasal spray. But did you know that you can also remedy some ailments with a remedy that is just in your kitchen cabinet or the fridge? Do you have a party planned and feel the tomcat coming up just by thinking about it? These tricks will save your life.

Sore throat

Before going to bed, make a cocktail of a splash of Bacardi, two squeezed oranges, the juice of one lemon, and a teaspoon of honey. Top it off with warm water and drink it all at once. Bet that your sore throat will be reduced by half the next morning?

Stomach flu/diarrhea

Diet cola can help fight germs like salmonella, but it is also your great savior during a stomach flu. The phosphoric acid in the sweet drink kills the bacteria of the germs. Additionally, the caffeine in cola also does its job. Caffeine stimulates the kidneys, causing fluid to leave the body faster. Also ideal if there's a bad mussel in your pot.

Nausea

Day at the amusement park on the agenda and you’re not feeling so great about that roller coaster? Make sure you have a (stick) sandwich in your handbag. The inside (the soft part) acts like a sponge and absorbs the stomach acids that are the main cause of nausea in no time. Also, it can sometimes relieve mild nausea to just let out a simple burp. A big gulp of cola after that bite of bread can also provide significant relief.

Heartburn

Well, now you also hear that voice in your head: take Gaviscon, but you can also just open your kitchen cabinet. A scoop of baking soda in your cup of hot water works wonders.

Lost voice

Egg yolk whipped with a teaspoon of sugar. Or, something tastier: tea made from flaxseed with a teaspoon of honey.

Hangover

After a night of heavy drinking, you might be better off opening a can of asparagus instead of that sticky shawarma sandwich. Not the most appetizing thing you might think of, but definitely a hangover remedy par excellence. The diuretic vegetable helps your liver (which has had a tough time in the hours after those glasses of vodka) detoxify. A bottle of energy drink can also be placed on your nightstand. The electrolytes in the drink (such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium) help restore your fluid levels. Just be careful with caffeine, as staring at the ceiling can have the opposite effect.
