You just have to make sure you are born in Paris. The rest will follow naturally. Easy for Diana Vreeland who was served glamour and culture like most of us were served potatoes with a meatball. Artists, writers, dancers from the Ballets Russes; everything came to the Vreeland household, and if it wasn't, she would just make it up.

Fortunately, it doesn't matter where your roots lie now. You could almost say that a touch of rural is at the heart of a beautiful story. The Frisian Doutzen who conquers the world, for example. Or our cover model Chelsey Weimar who simply rode her moped from Beemster for our first appointment, only to just as easily continue through Schiphol to her hometown New York. And yes, yes, yes, she has also dated Leonardo DiCaprio (as befits a good model, I would almost say). The moral of the story: the world is yours with Instagram and a good plan as a trampoline to an international life of a social butterfly. A shining example is Vivian Hoorn, photographer of the aforementioned series. If she is one thing, it is herself: model slash stylist slash photographer slash incredibly fun, entrepreneurial woman. All self-conceived and self-done.

My cradle was ‘just’ in Utrecht, just like that of the rest of my family, on both sides. Not much adventurous about it, in short. Fortunately, my father was a captain and the Mediterranean Sea was the playground for my brother and me. His first word was ‘Arab’ (a-ra-bier) and I took my first steps on the Acropolis. When I asked my father if I was at least conceived in an exotic place, he shamefully shook his head no. That had just happened in their apartment on Utrecht's Smaragdplein. He looked at me almost guilt-ridden. After a brief silence, he added: ‘But I can think of something exotic for you.’ And look, suddenly I had my touch of Vreeland.

Enjoy this issue full of travel and fashion. Because the world is yours and clothing is the best souvenir.

Take care,

May
