Netflix series receives a lot of criticism for body shaming
Aiii, that’s not what they hoped for at Netflix. You come up with a new series, and it gets slammed before it’s even aired. The trailer for Insatiable rubs many the wrong way. A little explanation.
In the series, you follow Patty, who is called ‘Fatty Patty’ by her classmates in the episodes. As the name suggests, Patty is overweight. She is not only insulted but also physically attacked. One day, she receives such a hard blow from a classmate that her jaw breaks. Just before the summer vacation, she undergoes surgery, making it difficult for her to eat and thus she suddenly loses pounds. Result? After the summer, no one recognizes Patty anymore. She has become slim in one go and super popular. And most people don’t like that plot at all.
‘Is that seriously a fatsuit?’ one reacts. ‘Give us a story where a girl with obesity stays overweight, struggles with it, but then overcomes this insecurity and accepts her body,’ says another on Twitter.
Lead actress Alyssa Milano responds on Twitter that they want to show what fat shaming can do with the series. ‘We are not fat shaming Patty. We discuss, through comedy, the damage caused by fat shaming.’ A petition has now been started to cancel the series. Attention-seeking or justified criticism? Well, I would say: judge for yourself.
