The 6 reasons why people always keep flirting

Whether you're in a relationship or not: throw in a drink and a chat with someone of the opposite sex happens in no time. It doesn't have to mean anything, of course.

Flirting is something we all do, sometimes, or even regularly, some more often than others. Flirting is also quite healthy: think of it as a way to boost your self-confidence without too many ulterior motives. It's also quite innocent, because often you barely realize that something is flirting and you don't even notice that you're doing it yourself. And if you're single, it certainly makes your evening a bit more exciting. Just checking what kind of meat you have in front of you, of course. The whole cat-and-mouse game. Laughing, looking, peeking, chatting, walking away, not wanting to walk away but doing it anyway, playing hard to get, backtracking again, chatting some more, making jokes, putting on lip gloss, touching, laughing, looking, cuddling, kissing. Oh well, that's how things go. Nature, huh. Hate the game, love the players.

According to researchers, there are six different reasons why people flirt, whether or not in the pub:

  1. To get sex. Well, logical, if you're single.
  2. You want to get into a relationship – preferably before Christmas – so you flirt away to see who bites.
  3. For fun: just to have a nice evening and when you go home, you've long forgotten all about it.
  4. Discovering: you want to see how you stand in the market, maybe especially if you've been sitting on the couch with the same man for decades. But even if you've been single for years, it's a bit of feeling out what happens when you put in some effort.
  5. For your self-confidence: you need that boost to find yourself a bit prettier, nicer, and more attractive again. And if he wants to come home with you, the game is already won and it gets boring again.
  6. You want something from the other person, like something at work or a bit of extra appreciation, and that works better if you throw in a bit of charm.
