The future of online dating

According to Black Mirror

Still searching for some Netflix inspiration? Have you happened to watch Black Mirror yet? I started it once with my sister, somewhere last year, and at the beginning I really didn't understand anything, because the first episode started right away with a man having to have sex with a pig. I know: very weird, I was just trying to explain it to Kiki and Lilian, but they quickly lost interest. Every episode of Black Mirror is completely different: there is a different setting, a different cast, a different storyline, but there is indeed a common thread to be found: no, not the pig, but the technology. And specifically the developments of it and how future inventions clash with human feelings. Are you still following me?

Anyway, season 4 has been online since December and there is particularly one that you must see if you are an avid Tinder user, because it paints a picture of what online dating could look like in the future. Alright, of course this all has a sci-fi touch, but the episode ‘Hang the DJ’ is my ‘what to watch’ tip for you today.

This episode is actually a kind of romantic love story of Joe (John from Peaky Blinders) and Amy (you might know her from King Arthur) who meet each other through a mega futuristic and bizarre dating app that can indicate in advance how long your relationships will last. Weird, yes. The two meet each other and then break up again, but somewhere they still realize that there are feelings. They are not allowed to break the rules of the app and unfortunately cannot be together.

I don't want to spoil the episode for you, but modern dating remains popular in the new year. And so the team of Black Mirror has shown their interpretation of the future of online algorithms and love. And well, if this is how it will really go in the future, I’m going for #ForeverAlone.
