This is how you quickly get rid of useless gifts

There you are, on December 5th with the entire family or group of friends. You have really done your best with your drawn lot and the gift is a hit. But then it's your turn: unfortunately, that uncle or colleague you hardly ever connect with has drawn you, and judging by the gift, he must have quickly scored this on the way here, let alone that he has read your wish list...

Or you have played the gift game very enthusiastically (my all-time favorite) and come home with a shitload of small, useless things that you swore during the game you absolutely had to have... Now you can of course keep these items in a big bag for the next birthday of an acquaintance or gift game, but since I can easily leave such a filled bag untouched for a year, I would prefer to get rid of it as soon as possible. But how and where can you go with your discarded but still brand new gifts?

  • The most obvious option is of course Marktplaats. Just make sure to include enough keywords in the first line to be found better. And what always works well is the word ‘free’. Instead of ‘cupcake maker with storage box’ (really one of those gifts that is only fun to use once, but mostly just takes up space in your kitchen), say ‘cupcake maker with free storage box’. Choose Bol.com if you want to sell your new books, CDs, DVDs, or games.
  • Look for a store that sells second-hand goods if you don't want to trade online. Some stores buy your products where you get a direct amount back, and some take a commission once the product is sold (for a price you have agreed upon together).
  • What I personally find a really nice option: offer your product in an (online) exchange store. In exchange for your product, you then receive points that you can spend on something else that is in the store. This way, you might find something that was actually on your wish list and make someone else happy with your gift.
  • Of course, you can also pass the gifts on to someone else. It's always handy to have some gifts at home for that one last-minute birthday. To avoid embarrassing moments: make a good mental note, so you don't give it back to the original giver...
  • Finally, it's also an option to donate everything to a good cause like the Food Bank or to take the gifts to a giveaway store. What may have been a trifle for you can be a huge and valuable gift for someone else.
